Way too long....
I just realized I hadn't updated my journal for ever. Way too much school and work. Been subbing....for all you yungin's out there....it's a job that can be great fun or absolute torture. Spent a day under lock down at a correctional school. It was fun. The kids were all ages (no classes 'cause they never know when they'll be in court or released) but at least divided by gender. Secondary/high school kids are together. Interestingly, the girls were harder then the boys. I had five guards outside in the hall ready to jump in if I poked my head out...maybe that helped a little. The kids were opinionated and antagonistic (typical secondary kids), but said they liked the class. Probably because we spent most of it discussing their opinions. I had a great time, too.
Last Thursday I subbed for a drama class. I was so excited, thought we'd do tons of fun stuff. Man, was I nuts. I walked in, the classes were small, 7th and 8th graders. The worst was the second class. They had an agenda. It wasn't the one I'd been given. But even when I tried to figure out what their agenda was they couldn't tell me. We tried rehearsal, pantimime, mime, stunt technique, story telling, reader's theatre....couldn't get them to do much of anything but fight with each other (physically no less!) and knock chairs over. Had to send a couple to the office. First time ever! Horrible experience!
Oh well, life is tough and then you die. Gotta' stick with the plan.
I start student teaching next month. Have my assignment, contacted the teacher. She wants me to find a twenty minutes play for a drama festival in March. One that high school students would like....any ideas out there? Would love some help!
