Because that's the best word that describes the latest episode. I HATE spending 50 minutes to watch a show that only gives you 10 minutes worth of actual relevant material. I hate, hate, HATE, with a searing hot passion when they show us scenes we've previously seen, but from a different angle. What really was the relevance of us seeing Michael with the others when Jack tried to call their bluff? Other than showing that Alex is compassionate and not really with the Other's agenda. Well guess what? WE FIGURED THAT OUT WHEN SHE LET CLAIRE GO!!!
I sometimes wish the writers of Lost would remember it's audience does have a collective intelligence higher than that of a grape. Sorry to all grapes out there.
So what did we learn outside of Jack is an absolute ass who has ZERO sense of compassion. Sawyer, the one everyone thinks is an asshole, has a surprising amount of compassion (just lack of class). I was able to stand Kate for once (I NEVER thought I'd say that) considering no one had to tell her to dig the graves, she did it herself out of respect for the two women lost. Are the writers FINALLY figuring out how to write her in a less annoying, and an actual strong/independent way?
We also figured out creepy Walt is alive, and the Others have some idea he's creepy. The Others also have a surprising amount of knowledge about our Losties, like for instance their full names. I'm not sure anyone outside of Hurley or one or two other people know that Sawyer's name is James Ford. It couldn't be said that Ethan knew, if he had then he'd have known his name wasn't on the manifest list.
Why, oh, WHY is there only ONE smart person on the island?! Why is it Sayid (is he even still ON this show?) is the ONLY person to get that Michael's erratic behaviour might mean a little more than a nervous father? And Jack gets MORE idiot points for wanting to TALK to Michael about it! Dude, you WANTED a war with the others, yet he has NO grasp on STRATEGY! You don't hand the bad guys all your advantages and hope sheer puffing out of chests will get the rest of the job done. Someone seriously needs to smack some sense into Jack.
His character has become possibly the single most unlikable character. He has zero compassion, is hung up on a vendetta, makes decisions based almost solely on his ego, and intense need to be right. I actually miss first season Jack, he was still and egomaniac and driven by pride, but he at least HAD emotions. Now we have this man so caught up in sticking it to the Others that he failed to remember two people had been murdered and their cold bodies were lying on the floor next to him! Fighting a war on grudges doesn't win a war, the guy who's BEEN in a war (thank you Sawyer, when did you get to be a voice of reason?) can tell you that. Plotting, planning, and understanding your enemy and their motives is what helps you win a war. Running in with guns blazing just gets alot of innocent people killed.
Common. Sense. Obviously something most of these people left behind as they crashed.
As for imagery, I like the idea that Kate was digging one grave, and Hurley digging the other. As assumption would go I'd assume Hurley was digging Libby's and Kate was digging Ana's. I like that Kate was paying enough respect for Ana and her life to be the one to dig her grave, even though they never got along. I was actually surprised that Jack wasn't the one doing it, then I realized it wasn't an instance where he could challenge someone to see whose wiener was bigger. It at least allowed me to start respecting Kate a little, so I suppose that's an improvement.
BTW, how many times are these people doing to needlessly throw out things that they might need? Yeah, it's great Charlie had enough in him to chuck Heroin once and for all (though I'm still miffed his withdrawl was so unrealistic, but I guess it was just the "island"). HOWEVER, as dramatic as this is, WHY would Jack the doctor, who won back all the medicine from Sawyer in Poker NOT demand Sawyer hand over all the Heroin?! We DO know Jack is smart enough to realize it's medicinal properties, so why didn't he take them all? Now it's sitting at the bottom of the ocean (btw, Domanic Monaghan throws like a girl) doing no one any good. I hope no one, say, gets shot in a huge battle with the others and might need that heroin to feel a little less in pain or anything.
What else, I find it interesting that even though Locke was discouraged after last weeks episode, he seems to have refound his faith in the island, I'm sure it'll prove a motivator for next weeks finale. Eko is becoming a bunker squatter. Michael I have no sympathy for at all. I KNOW he wants his son back, but if the man has this little touch on rationality, I don't BLAME Walt's mom for taking him away.
Pretty much the whole episode was filler except for 10 or so minutes. Disappointing at best. I also hated the flashback style. I liked it when they used it in "The Other 48 Days" because the days moved consecutively. These flashes kept making me think I was watching Xena where everything happened 10 years ago (or 35 when they slept for 25 of it...Xena was busy 10 years ago). I'm interested to see how the finale works out.
Oh yeah, also...
Dr. Writers/Producers/Creators:
For the love of all that's Holy, STOP bringing up why you decided to kill off Libby. And don't use "we didn't think it would be emotional enough so we chose a character fans liked". A.) If the way you wrote a character turned off the audience and made your big shock less emotional, that's not any characters fault, it's YOURS. B.) Only shitty shows like "The L Word" get to pull that stunt and keep it's audience because it really is the only show of it's kind. And, it's creator is an idiot and the fans know that. Your excuse is what exactly?
It's not cute, or clever or anything like that. Saying a character wasn't as sympathetic as you had hoped is proof to everyone that YOU dropped the ball somewhere along the line.
Also, it will only further enrage people. Let sleeping dogs lie and MOVE THE HELL ON! And that goes for EVERY media person asking this question! Personally, can't someone ask instead who is it in charge of consistency on this show, and how exactly did they get their job, because there IS no consistency. That's the question I want an answer to.
ETA: I also feel really jipped that the creators seem to underuse Harold Perrineau (sp?). The man is a great actor, yet his character is so one dimensional it's amazing.
