You Don't Get To Use People And Expect Them To Stick Around.

Some more notes on How to Get Away with Murder! Mainly season one, but there are a couple of mentions of the first episode of season two.

Connor: Look, I'm just saying that we should get drunk. Enjoy our last days of freedom before Annalise gives us up.

And bang, right? And also bang. This show presents so many great opportunities for desperate 'we know each other so intimately, we've seen the worst parts of each other, and we're all screwed anyway; no point making good decisions' banging.

The kids absolutely cannot handle Annalise being loving and kind to them when they know that she knows they killed her husband. I love Connor closing his eyes in agony when she cups his face in her hands. She was never so gentle with them before the murder, either.

Although Michaela's the one who can't really function at all in the immediate aftermath of the murder, I think Connor's the one who's least able to handle the whole situation. He is absolutely falling apart and I love it.

I still dislike Laurel/Frank, but they do have one scene I like: when Laurel's breaking down and won't let him touch her to comfort her but doesn't drive him away either, so he ends up just standing there, watching her cry. Pity it couldn't happen with a pairing I had warmer feelings about.

I don't hate Asher, I've concluded. For a while, I wasn't sure how I felt about him. He's obnoxious, but he's not a bad kid. I like that, despite Asher's stereotypically bro-ish nature, the fact that Connor is gay in no way prevents Asher from considering him his bro. Of course, Asher wasn't involved in the murder, so I'll never love him the way I love the murder quartet, but he's okay.

I'd forgotten Annalise framed Nate! Jesus, poor Nate. He really doesn't deserve everything this show puts him through.

I love Wes's little '??' expression when Laurel introduces him as her husband. Wes has a lot of great expressions. I particularly enjoy the '??????? why is this happening' series of Wes walking in on his hardass teacher having sex, then meeting his hardass teacher's husband and realising this is not the same guy, then the scene where his hardass teacher tries to explain everything to Wes and ends up just crying at him and touching him a lot while he stands there in frozen, bewildered horror.

Annalise and Wes seem a hair away from making out in all their scenes together. I sort of love it.

I want to see the actual scene where the murder quartet tie up Rebecca! Show me how the decision to tie her up was made, who actually did it, their frantic arguments, who was completely freaking out! Laurel's definitely struggling with it; in the aftermath, she looks like she's about to throw up.

The last episode of season one has some interesting parallels with Umineko in the idea that, when the truth is unknowable, all you can do is believe whatever version enables you to cope.

I'm liking the Connor/Oliver relationship more this time around! Connor's just so into him and it's pretty cute. I'd forgotten how he went to Oliver's house to hyperventilate at him after the murder but, of course, was completely unable to say why he was freaking out.

Huh. I'd forgotten that season two went 'oh, by the way, Asher also has a Dark Secret'. I don't remember what Asher's secret actually is, but, whatever the case, it feels a bit of an unnecessary addition. Asher's the innocent; that's his role. He's the only one of the students who wasn't involved with the murder; he's the only one in the house who doesn't know what happened there. He's the character who's outside everything; he gives us the perspective of someone who hasn't irreparably screwed up. I'm not sure he needs dark secrets.

I'm a big fan of Team Murder dancing together at the end of episode 2x01. It's a fascinating blend of the innocent intimacy of dancing with the weird intimacy of all the terrible things they've done together.

The phrase 'Notes on How to Get Away with Murder' seems a bit odd, now that I'm looking at it. I promise I'm just talking about the show.

how to get away with murder, when they cry
