Because the author is too lazy to properly imply all the puppy-kicking he does in his free time, I guess?
Second, we have of course to establish that he's so capital-E evil that he even has to whip prostitutes to force them to have sex with him.
... I'm ... not sure the author knows how prostitution works? Admittedly I don't either, but I'm pretty sure this is something you could negotiate ahead of time? And that if you were the type to whip the girls you bought, word would probably get around and you'd stop being able to buy them?

Now it would have been cool if this had been foreshadowing towards the knife being coated in poison and her taking advantage of people underestimating a girl stabbing them with such a short blade, but I'm definitely expecting too much here, aren't I.

I'm crying tears of confusion at this entire section, tbh, because how can there be so many strong emotional reactions in such quick succession that are all so unrelated. :'D

Mikhail might have actually been heartbroken, until he recovered enough to realize how much free time he has now that he's not having to spend it all on dealing with Nicky's nonsense. :D
Valentin's level of regret would probably vary significantly based on how much Nicky left for him -- maybe a few days of sincere sadness, but after that he'd probably swan off with his new riches, only vaguely mourning the missed opportunities. :D

I like how even this peak of character development still boils down to "I feel sorry for the fact that she's had a shitty life and am realizing that she's much younger than me BUT ALSO I still totally want to bone her. A lot." XD

I'm going to guess it was just an issue of editing here, and that he's mad that he can't get any girl to sleep with him, not that even prostitutes turn him down.... probably. Because yeah, in the 1870s I can hardly imagine they had much leeway to disagree with their customers. This is such transparent BUT HE'S REALLY EVIL, and direly needed considering Nicholas is being the fucking worst :')

I thought maybe it was accidental in book two but.... it seems the author either does this intentionally or really is that dense. YIIIIKES.

IT'S SO DUMB considering he OWNS THE ENTIRE SHIP and only keeps the clearly shady captain on board because it sounds like it'll have an entertaining pay-off. So basically, all his troubles are his own damn fault (which is never reflected upon in book two!). He could have kicked off all the sleezy, untrustworthy guys, given Silver her own and have Mikhail or Valentin babysit her (which he does later, anyway). IT'S SO DUMB AND CONTRIVED :')
