Mal comes second. Mal ALWAYS comes second. And Zoe, with him seeing the real her! And Wash's running commentary! and he is the only one servicing Inara! And Kaylee, all covered in grease! AND RIVER'S TOTALLY MADE ME FLAIL!

She moved like Inara and smiled like Kaylee and demanded like Zoe. She ordered like Mal and bullied like Simon and teased like Wash.

Well, Wash and Zoe know about each other, and Id lay odds that Zoe knows about everyone. She just strikes me as the type who would know and keep it to herself unless it became a problem. Mal suspects about Kaylee, but doesnt know about anyone else. Simon picks up on the tension between Mal and Jayne, and suspects that Kaylee and Jayne was before he and River came on board. Inara chooses not to know. River knows, of course. Book picks up on the signals, but again, chooses not to know.

What do you think?

What find MORE interesting is not who knows what... but what they think about why Jayne's done what he's done.

I think they all just WANT to believe he's in it for the sex. That to find any further depth in it changes who Jayne is to them.

River knows. River knows, and pretends she doesn't, because it would all come out in a jumble anyway and someone would get hurt.

Maybe it would be Kaylee, who wants someone who wants her. And he wants her - all smile and shine just for him. Kaylee cries when she's hurt, and nobody likes the sunshine to turn to rain.

It might be Inara, who should see, but doesn't. She turns plastic eyes onto him, who sees what she needs, but she doesn't really see. He takes care of her porcelain habits and knows she might break under him.

Zoe and Wash could be hurt, possibly, as no one else would understand their actions reactions. Both know of one, but not the others. He makes her laugh, and she makes him come, and he can take orders and insults in equal measure without failing to measure up

That kind of made me choked up and... wow.

I considered writing a recollection of it all through River's eyes and I just cannot handle her voice the way you do.

It's perfect and confusing and so very.... Jayne through River's eyes. Honest. Sad. True.

I figure River is the only one who is capable of seeing AND accepting the whole thing. But, of course, it comes through the River filter, so its a little sideways.
