pots and herbs

Hmm. I've successfully been able to claim a bit of the backyard for gardening! Or well.. something similar. We ended up landscaping the yard last year, and so the "good spot" of the yard is now filled with rocks and some pretty plants, but not much else. But then there is this little wedge of space between the gardening shed and this upraised bit. It's not really shady, except for in the evening, but I think it would be perfect to grow a potted herb garden there, since I could then take them inside during the winter (as far as I know, herbs do not survive well outside in -30C weather). I'm just worried that because different herbs require different needs, I won't be able to purchase the right soil, and the place where I want to plant stuff is too shady, etc.

Is there a "potted herbs garden guide for dummies" floating anywhere on the internet?

Pics will come soon. I'm determined to do this, dammit!

ETA: Hmm. Just realized a problem. My house doesn't have any windows that are "sun-friendly" except for my basement bedroom window, which stops receiving direct light because of the over-hang. Oh bullocks.
