A Brief Stint in Seattle

Sep 22, 2009 23:37

First off, this is not my RainFurrest 2009 con report; that'll be coming later, when I have time to organize my thoughts (and my photos).

Following the con, though, I took a couple days extended vacation to hang out and see Seattle proper for a bit. I kind of wish I had more time, but I've gotten to have some fun in the time I've had.

People apparently call this "the Darth Vader building." The moment I saw it, I thought that it looked like something right out of Shadowrun, so I had to take a picture of it.

The Seattle downtown is much nicer, much prettier, and much more interesting than the area around the RainFurrest hotel.

Evidently, it's supposed to be really rainy in Seattle, but it was a gorgeous day.

Here's my FAILED PILGRIMAGE to NOT ACTUALLY THE ORIGINAL STARBUCKS.

Yes, apparently, the actual original Starbucks was like, a block over. Two Starbucks being only a block apart? In Seattle? I AM SO SHOCKED.

They did, however, make a good cappuccino, and I looked pretty happy, thinking I was where I actually wasn't.

Malin and I went and got lunch together at a lovely Basque tapas place called "Txori." The place was this cozy little cafe, where we got to sit up with the chef (a very nice girl from Northern California!) and talk throughout the meal as she cooked it for us. It was awesome.

This is a canutillo con anchoa. It's made with this savory creme cheese with an anchovy inserted into it. It was really good.

This was delicious, too. It would be the ultimate comfort food if I lived anywhere near this place.

I also had a drink called a lejilla, which was half lemon soda and half Stella Artois. Which sounds really weird, but it was actually really good.

At the actual Pike Market, they've got a bunch of weird stuff. This was a story devoted entirely to animal knickknacks (I didn't end up buying anything).

This was in one of two used bookstores I went to. Someone shelved the Qu'ran in the "Fiction" section. Ouch.

At the other used bookstore I went to, I ended up picking copies of Bester's The Stars My Destination and Pohl's Gateway

I went out again tonight, and took some more pictures (including some from the top of the Space Needle), but I don't have those photos ready, yet.

Instead, I'll leave you with this:

Words of wisdom, found embedded into the pavement of the sidewalk of Western Ave, north of Pike St. somewhere. While walking along, I just happened to notice it. I wonder how many people do.
