Physical Description: He's 6'4" and in keeping up with Starfleet regulations, he's in good shape. His eyes are blue and his beard is dark with gray mixing in. In 2379, he's 44.
Abilities: Will is just an ordinary human with no special physical abilities. However, his wife, an empath, taught him to communicate telepathically with her when she projected her thoughts to him--this ability is unique to their relationship. He's an accomplished pilot, able to fly the Sovereign class Enterprise-E manually. He has exceptional tactical abilities and demonstrates them during engagements with enemy ships.
Weakness: He has a strong sense of right and wrong as well as a strong devotion to duty. He has nearly been court-martialed on a few occasions because of his devotion to what he perceives as being the right thing. Being an ordinary human makes him prone to anything and everything that could harm him. He can be killed or hurt with relative ease. Will also is "prone to short bouts of self-doubt regarding his perceived complacency toward ambition each time he debated and turned down his own ship command." His stature sometimes makes it difficult for crew members to communicate with him easily.
Personality: Will has a robust outlook on life and is extremely easygoing and friendly. He was somewhat of a ladies man early on and he has a natural charm that worked well on a number of women.
History: Wil Riker was born in August of 2335 to Betty and Kyle Riker in Valdez, Alaska. His mother died when he was very little. As a way of coping with his grief, Kyle Riker pulled away from his son and a huge rift formed between them. Will told all his friends at school that his mother was still alive and he eventually came to believe if himself. His teachers eventually told his father and together, the had a talk with Will. He realized his mother was never coming back and he cried the entire night. It was a major step towards healing.
However, the relationship between father and son continued to deteriorate. Will was forced to care for himself and developed his cooking skills out of necessity. His father finally abandoned Will when he was 15 in 2350. He held a grudge against his father for the next fifteen years. He entered Starfleet Academy in 2353 and graduated 8th in his class in 2357.
Shortly after graduation, Ensign Riker was posted to the USS Pegasus as conn officer. He was fresh out of the academy and very serious about his duties. He was loyal and obedient to his commanding officer to a point where he behaved against the principles of the Prime Directive during a crisis on the ship. Captain Pressman had been testing an illegal cloaking device which lead most of the crew to a rare mutiny. Riker was the only bridge officer to defend his captain and engaged in a phaser fight all the way to an escape pod. The Pegasus exploded shortly after Riker escaped. Because of the sensitive nature of the experiments, the incident was quickly covered up and classified.
In 2359, he was stationed on Betazed where he met Deanna Troi. They began a serious relationship that lasted for years. In 2361, Riker was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to the USS Potemkin. He and Troi planned to reunite but they eventually lost contact. During an away mission to Nervala IV, Riker was the last to beam back to the ship. Atmospheric conditions threatened to dissipate his signal patterns, so the transporter chief aboard the Potemkin doubled the beam. Unknown to anyone, this stream bounced back to the surface and Riker ended up with a duplicate. Riker received a promotion to Lt. Commander for "exceptional valor" during the mission and was transferred to the USS Hood as first officer.
His service on the Hood was exemplary and he was offered his first command, the ill-fated USS Drake. He turned down the offer for a prestigious offer as first officer on the USS Enterprise. He was selected sight-unseen by Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Over the course of his service on the Enterprise, Will was offered several more commands. It wasn't until 2379--the same year he married his on again-off again love, Deanna Troi--that he finally accepted command of the USS Titan.
