I feel a little like there must be something wrong with my musical taste, but lately I've been finding some of Bach's music a little turgid. Some of it is still as exquisite as ever-Brandenburg 3, certain of the chorales, Goldberg Variation, er, BWV850, etc etc-but others, like certain of the other Goldberg Variations, certain movements from concertos, sort of... sedate, weighed down by a boring speed and boring harmonies that are sounding too overcomplex to be beautiful any more. They're not inspiring.
Just, wtf?! This is BACH here. By contrast, I've been listening to music by people like Purcell, Byrd, Albinoni, Corelli... and it's all beautiful. But I'm fairly certain that they are actually less accomplished composers than Bach. So, what's going on!
It may have something to do with Bach's output. He wrote so damn much-a fugue every morning keeps the doctor away-that I guess it's understandable that some of it is sub-par.
Also, I have far more Bach than I do the others. And when they're played on the radio, perhaps only the good ones are played of Purcell etc, because they're so much less well known that they wouldn't suffer having bad compositions played?
Csshh. In addition: philistines. It occurs to me that one of the worst problems with current society is its deeply, bluntly, agonizingly philistine behavior. I've been trying to put my finger on this for absolutely ages and now that I've thought of it it seems too obvious to count as a deep observation and
