Disc 1 is the fifteen 'song targets', as close as I can do to how they are in canon. Disk 2 is those same targets in fanon/fandom.
Done because I was bored and nobody's posted here for yonks.
Enjoy~
SPACE CASES
Disc 1 - Canon Cases
The Christa:
VNV Nation - AirshipsI was not alone, I think it was the first time/ Watching you rise splendid and graceful,/ I cheered as you sailed, a greatness unknown/ I laughed as I waved and imagined you saw me//
This song reminds me, every time I hear it, of the kids' first reactions to the Christa's arrival in We Gotta Get Out Of This Place.
Thelma:
Caramba - Hubba Hubba Zoot ZootHubba hubba zoot zoot/ Deba uba zat zat a-num num/ Hubba hubba zoot zoot/ Deba uba zat zat a-num num//
So daft, so quintessentially her. And can't you just see her dancing to this?
Commander Goddard:
Mulan - Be A ManTime is racing toward us till the Huns arrive/ Heed my every order and you might survive/ You're unsuited for the rage of war/ So pack up, go home, you're through/ How could I make a man out of you?//
A frazzled commander trying to make soldiers out of a pack of misfits. I imagine Goddard and Li Shang might have a lot to talk about.
T.J. Davenport:
Lit - Over My HeadThey wanna try and build me up/ So they can tear me down/ I wish that I could be back there/ But I'm writing here right now//
Because she really is in over her head, and because she knows and acknowledges it, and because I didn't have any songs that fit the 'comic relief' angle she's so often stuck playing.
Harlan Band:
Trapt - HeadstrongBack off, I'll take you on/ Headstrong, I'll take on anyone/ I know that you are wrong/ and this is not where you belong//
This song sums up Harlan fairly well without being insulting. (I'll leave that to his song on the Fanon side of things. ^_~)
Catalina:
Matchbox 20 - UnwellTalking to myself in public/ Dodging glances on the train/ I know/ I know they've all been talking 'bout me//
Catalina's not crazy... her best friend is just invisible... not imaginary. There's a difference.
Suzee:
Fountains of Wayne - DeniseI know this girl named Denise/ She makes me weak at the knees/ She drives a lavender Lexus/ She lives in Queens but her dad lives in Texas//
Enter Suzee, the 'cool girl' who can do just about anything.
Radu:
Bruce Hornsby - The Way It IsSaid, hey, little boy you can't go/ where the others go/ 'cause you don't look like they do//
Radu, trying so hard to get along, smacked down so often for something he can't help. Bigotry sucks.
Rosie Ianni:
Katrina and the Waves - Walking on SunshineI'm walking on sunshine, wo~oah/ I'm walking on sunshine, wo~oah/ I'm walking on sunshine, wo~oah/ and don't it feel good!//
Ah, Rosie. Always up, always happy, always nice. She's a good kid. People who know people like her are lucky indeed.
Bova:
REM - It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)It's the end of the world as we know it/ It's the end of the world as we know it/ It's the end of the world as we know it/ And I feel fine!//
Gloomy, snarky Bova. Always predicting the worst-case scenario. Oddly, I like him just as much as Rosie.
The Casers (and accompanying adults):
Fastball - The WayAnyone could see the road that they walk on is paved in gold/ And it's always summer, they'll never get cold/ They'll never get hungry/ They'll never get old and gray//
Because this is an awesome song, because it fits even more after the series was cancelled before its time, and because I probably would have got lynched if I'd left it out. (j/k on the last point)
Warlord Shank: (note: song lyrics given here are translated from the original German)
E Nomine - LuciferThe abyss, the assessor, Chaos./ Fallen from God, I am the tempter,/ the destroyer, the Anti-Christ./ My name is Lucifer.//
This song sounds evil, it's about the Devil when Shank is the main 'devil figure' of Space Cases, and the main speaker has a very Shankian evil baritone. It's perfect.
Sirrola Elmira:
Splashdown - Karma SlaveHow do all the Wheels inside the Wheels revolving,/ Go on, and on, and on, and on, and on.../ Spinning on the Wheel the souls of One evolving,/ Live on, live on, live on, live on, live on.../ Anyone who claims that they know the answer's coming back again...//
It must be hard not to feel trapped when you already know the results of whatever action you take.
Reaver:
Rammstein - Feuer FreiGetadelt wird wer Schmerzen kennt/ vom Feuer das die Haut verbrennt/ Ich werf ein Licht/ in mein Gesicht/ Ein heisser Schrei/ Feuer frei!//
Reaver... a nasty, sociopathic piece of work, arguably the most convincing villain in the show (until the end of the episode... Thousand Island dressing?!), and just might be crazy.
The Stardogs:
Will Smith - Men In BlackWe’re your first last and only line of defense/ Against the worst scum of the universe/ So don’t fear us cheer us/ If you ever get near us don’t jeer us we’re fearless//
I honestly cracked up when I thought of using this song... because it's so TRUE. This is the 'galactic badasses' side of the Stardogs we see in the series, mostly through the lens of Goddard's reminiscences.
Here... is where things get interesting.
Disc 2 - Fanon Cases
The Christa:
Julia Ecklar - The PhoenixIn a tower of flame in capsule twelve/ I was there/ I know not where they laid my bones/ it could be anywhere/ but when fire and smoke had faded/ the darkness left my sight/ and I found my soul in a spaceship's hull/ riding home on a trail of light//
I know I'm not the only one to speculate that the connection between the Christa, an admittedly living starship, and her namesake goes beyond just a shared name.
Thelma:
Lemon Demon - Word Disassociationenemy lasagna/ robust below wax/ semiautomatic aqua/ accompany slacks/ why coffee gymnastic/ motorcycle unibrow//
Fanon Thelma is just as goofy and offbeat as Canon Thelma.
Commander Goddard:
Hot Chocolate - You Sexy ThingI believe in miracles/ Where you from, you sexy thing/ I believe in miracles/ Since you came along, you sexy thing//
All those girls who squealed over Radu when Space Cases was first aired? Most of them are lusting after Goddard now. (No, the use of this particular song was NOT inspired by Paul Boretski's venture into soft-core porn. Really. Stop looking at me like that.)
T.J. Davenport:
Karen Linsley - Pioneers of MarsWe are the new explorers, a sacred trust we keep/ From forefathers before us who braved the briny deep/ Our mission aims us skyward to the cold hard light of stars/ We leave Terra behind us to be the pioneers of Mars.//
I can imagine this as Mars colony's 'national anthem'.
Harlan Band:
Three Dead Trolls In A Baggie - The Asshole SongMe and my stupid friends drive around real late/ Our Camaros don't have mufflers and we think it's really great./ Whenever you're at dances we make cusses at your date/ But our only real girlfriends are the kind that you inflate, Huh!/ Oooooh I am an asshole//
The reasoning behind my choice of song here should be self-evident.
Catalina:
Shania Twain - That Don't Impress Me MuchI've known a few guys who thought they were pretty smart/ But you've got being right down to an art/ You think you're a genius-you drive me up the wall/ You're a regular original know-it-all//
This was mostly chosen for my views on Cat and Harlan's squabbling, both canon and fanon.... he thinks he's cool, she thinks he's a dork.
Suzee:
Dion - Runaround SueHere's my story, it's sad but true/ It's about a girl that I once knew/ She took my love then ran around/ With every single guy in town//
Because she does (run around, that is... stringing Harlan and Radu along like puppets) and because she is (A Sue of the first water).
Radu:
Robin Black and The Intergalatic Super Stars - More Effeminate Than YouAnd you say you love me/ And that you'll be true/ But how can you love someone/ who's more effeminate than you?//
Because, in a lot of the slash (and het!) fic I've read, as well as the opinions aired by some fellow Casers (naming no names, you know who you are), Radu is relegated to being the emotacular little
uke boi.
Rosie Ianni:
The Rembrandts - I'll Be There For YouI'll be there for you (When the rain starts to pour)/ I'll be there for you (Like I've been there before)/ I'll be there for you ('Cause you're there for me too)//
Rosie, in fic, is either one-notedly cheery, or given a more 3D supportive-'Good Friend' role.
Bova:
Voltaire - The Headless WaltzAll my troubles, all my pain/ Stems from this thing that you call a "brain"/ Be my guest, sever me from the source/ Of all my agony//
Bova, on the other hand, retains his fatalism but adds a more darkly sardonic air. I can picture him liking Voltaire, it's his sort of gallows humor.
The Casers (and accompanying adults):
Electrasy - Cosmic CastawayIn here with no pain, you hurt me again/ And I want but have none/ I should beat the alien/ But here I'm no one, a Cosmic Castaway//
They're not lost, exactly... they know where they are, they know how to get home... it's just going to take them a heck of a long time to get there.
Warlord Shank:
Little Shop Of Horrors - Mean Green Mother From Outer SpaceI'm just a mean green mother from outer space and I'm bad./ I'm just a mean green mother from outer space and it looks like you been had./ I'm just a mean green mother from outer space,/ So get off my back, 'n get out my face,/ 'Cause I'm mean and green, and I am bad.//
I nearly sprayed the TV with soda when I first heard this, because the first thought in my mind was, 'Shank!'
Sirrola Elmira: (note: in .m4a format but works perfectly well with iTunes)
Carfax Abbey - Cry Little SisterA last fire will rise behind those eyes/ Black house will rock, blind boys don't lie/ Immortal fear, that voice so clear/ Through broken walls, that scream I hear//
One part abused princess, one part menacing Spung, one part eerie mystic. Mix to taste. That's fanon Elmira. (I put in this particular remix because it's the best version I've ever heard of this song.)
Reaver:
Judas Priest - Breaking the LawSo much for the golden future, I can’t even start/ I’ve had every promise broken, there’s anger in my heart/ You don’t know what it’s like, you don’t have a clue/ If you did you’d find yourselves doing the same thing too//
Reaver's fans (scary thought, I know.. ~grin, duck, and run~) let us into the more, well, human side of his personality... the renegade behind the sociopath.
The Stardogs:
Kristoph Klover - Fire in the SkyPrometheus, they say, brought God's fire down to Man/ and we've caught it, tamed it, trained it, since our history began/ Now we're going back to Heaven just to look him in the eye/ There's a thunder 'cross the land and a fire in the sky!//
Fanfiction and fan speculation lets us see the Stardogs from the inside... the pride, the conviction, the commitment, and sometimes, just sometimes, the awe-filled feeling of 'wow... we get to do THIS for a LIVING!' that has characterized the space program from the first.
