Lately I have been listening to “Hattie Big Sky” by Kirby Larson, a fantastic book about a 16 year old homesteader out in Montana. I am nearing the end of the book and things don’t seem to be getting better for Hattie. Her troubles and the way she writes makes me think of things in the world today. It makes me want to write like her and describe things in much the same way she does.
I went to the first meeting of a little writer’s group I am trying to create with some people from church. So far we have four members total, and only three (including myself) were there last night. We discussed where we want to take the writer’s group and what we want out of it. We drummed out some of our ideas on the matter and then eventually turned to our writing. One of our members, Deb had not really brought anything (or rather she hadn’t prepared anything as we were meeting at her house she wouldn’t have to “bring” anything) but she did gather up a few poems she had written that we gave a once over to.
I read out loud both of the pieces I brought with me. I had brought “Window to my heart” and “Little Red” both of which the other two women liked and gave some great feedback on. I was happy to have both given a once over as I haven’t really had a chance to work on editing either of them, and both are something that I would really like to submit for publishing in the near future.
I also submitted this week “Window to my heart” to
flame_fanning for editing. I really think that story has some good potential and hope that I will get good feedback from it. If I get enough good feedback regarding it I will probably see about submitting it.
I also spoke with my manager yesterday about her ex-husband, he has recently been diagnosed with some sort of lymphoma. Her oldest daughter was from that marriage so they are dealing with this as a family. It makes me want to really get back to work on the cancer book that I am slowly working on.
So much to do lately and so little time.
