How many days I’ve wasted
Drinking at the Bear and Key!
But you can’t rightly blame me
For I’ve nowhere else to be
How many misspent evenings in a
Loud and boozy chat?
But I’ve nowhere to go and so
You must forgive me that
How many friends my loosened tongue
Has chased away from me
But truth must be embraced, my friend
Though bitter it may be!
In truth, you are my only friend
The rest are long since gone
But perseverance is a virtue;
One must carry on!
And that is why I’m here, you see,
So early in the day
Forsaking friendly company
Is simply not the way
Philosophers may spend their lives
In search of what is true
My friend, I say I’ll spend my time
Here at the pub with you!
You always meet me with a smile
That never seems to tire
Beneath the neon lights you hand me
Pints that gleam like fire
I dance and sing and make a show
And fall upon the floor
And then you laugh and say to me,
“Perhaps another pour?”
The other patrons frown at me
“My boy,” they cry, “you’re wet!
Today you’ll have your fun, but
With tomorrow comes regret!”
They say, “You mustn’t throw away
The only life you’ve got!
You really shouldn’t drink so much”
But tell me, friend, why not?
I’m very good at drinking
I do nothing half as well
So one more round of beers, I say
Or two more, what the hell!
