drama

well I'm not much of a literary critic, because I think i'm rather stupid; I'm not much of a analytical one because I don't think people generally do that when they watch 82 episode long drama serials; I'm not much of a thinker unless it's a hooker (the show, duh).
After 82x40 minutes worth of hong kong drama; I finally finished The Gem of Life, rather good watch overall; love how they fight, power play and bitch. all the trademarks of a good hongkong drama serial, plus the dialogues and bitch-fight scenes are just awesome.
I enjoyed how they use death as a plot device, but one thing I can't stand about all these drama serials is their notion of a family; brings up all the disgusting, unrealistic, chinese values of a family and how important it is to become a family. Fittingly, the devil's advocate who spoke cantonese was a caucasian dude who did all the dirty work; well sucks to the funky ideas of what makes a family. The mid-scenes were brilliant, especially the cheap plot twists and the abrupt cuts in frames made every episode a cliff-hanger, and great ones at that. Most scenes are often unexpected, probably because of the reverse psychology enforced; since most would assume that it is a drama serial, coincidences would happen, people can just know what's going out and cows can defy gravity since drama serials are often (esp the sg ones) illogical; which makes the action possible. Yet in here, it follows the laws of physics, and is rather logical, even if it dulls down the plot; which is what makes it all the more interesting and unpredictable.
well, the thing I would hate about this drama would be it's Deus ex machina ending when the mother reminds them that they are family (sucks to chinese values) and how they just drop all bows and arrows and stop fighting. If they were really bent on revenge and some to the extent of mental insanity, why would a demented woman's words change reality. My guess would be that the producers ran over the budget and had to put a stop to it, given the abrupt ending, leaving the audience to answer all the questions of who really killed who and such.
i would think that the production was really interesting, scenic shifts from Tibet to Hong Kong to France and Thailand; yet it defeats the purpose of the story because there were too many things and characters to take note of that people end up forgetting the plot line which makes it difficult, since the storylines are not self contained within the few episodes; this grand tapestry should only be watched in quick succession, any pauses in between would result in an unpleasant viewing experience; unless you have photogenic memory, you shouldn't try otherwise. (I finished it across 2plus weeks)

well, wasted 54.6 hours of my life watching this at the expense of geog notes, math papers and such. time to read fight club and kill my studying time.

fun
