And now, by request, "Hallelujah"

Some of you are aware of my bizarre collection of covers of the Leonard Cohen song, "Hallelujah."

The first version I heard of it was Bono's unique take on it. Of course at the time, I had no idea it was a unique take. It just was.

The next version I heard was Jeff Buckley's famous version. Imagine my surprise! I wasn't even sure it was the same song!

When I saw another person had covered it, I did a bit of research and found that it had been covered about a BILLION different times. Or maybe only 999,999,997 times. But you get the gist.

It became a game to me to try and collect different versions of the song, and I have a good number of them and have heard a few more even than I was able to collect. One of my favorites, Bono's notwithstanding, is this one. The guy with the gap in his teeth (last one to sing) looks all goofy, and then he opens his mouth and my teeth fall out. Whoops. /bookbycover

Apparently these guys are a group called The Guitar Buddies and they cover this song a lot. (This video does a poor job of mixing those performances). Eh. It's better than I could have. /complain

Another favorite version is by Rufus Wainwright, but not the version he recorded that apparently is on Shrek (which have not seen) but rather this one on RTE Two's "Other Voices" in 2006. Leave it to me to love the Irish performance.

While trying to see which show it was on that video (Rufus has done this cover a lot - in a bathrobe with his sister at Glastonbury, both of em looking completely cracked out), I found this instrumental by another Irish fella named Skully. It's a fan exclusive so you have to log in and become a fan, but it's a good version if you like instrumentals, and especially if you like Irish instrumentals and the song "Hallelujah."

Here is that guy who used to hang around with Bell X1. He's not that bad and he has dimples. Some of you might have heard of him? Damien Rice?

My awesome Drummer friend Dec has pointed me toward a couple of versions, one by his ex-bandmate, now playing as Cousin Bill. You can download it for free from their site. It's really good.

Another indie artist (I randomly stumbled upon this one through YouTube) offering his free cover is David Choi.

One of my Irish musician acquaintances has actually covered the song for his CD, Building Churches - a fellow named Danny Darcy. I think of all the versions I have heard, his voice is the closest to Leonard Cohen's own. Sample of it here.
