Short Story - Random Inspiration from Art.

Saw this on Deviantart just a second ago and fell in love with it.

The image of two people, avoiding looking at each other, strangers conversing in dim tones as they moved back and forth through the train. They still avoided looking each other directly in the eyes. Instead they shifted their eyes to the window...eyes wistful and dream-like. They were leaving their home...leaving their place for something completely new and exciting.

America...

War was coming and they'd escape, they'd flee like the cowards they were. Her husband was in danger and judging by the same look and gestures from him...he would miss this place. But there was a glimmer of something in his eyes, of hope for a better future that flickered in and out.

She...she was just reluctant.

And for a moment, her shoulders drooped with her sigh and she stared out onto the vast lands as they moved.

"Darling?" a soft whisper awoke her from her musings and she tilted her head just slightly to look at him. She was still angry, still did not wish to speak to him.

"Yes?" a short response would be best.

"It's all right." His grey eyes crinkled at the sides and a dim, but real smile, lifted the corners of his mouth. "It's all right." he repeated and reached across the table to grasp her hand in his. Warm hands...soft as the book-lover he was.

And then, she turned fully to them and their eyes met...

They smiled together and hope warmed them together.
