The Problem with Time-Shifting in a Media-Saturated Culture

Aug 22, 2007 16:21

So I've been watching "America's Got Talent" all season . . . well, I passed up some of the early rounds, but I've been a regular viewer ever since they got down to serious contenders. And usually, we watch the show on the night it happens, delayed just long enough so that we can skip commercials (the only way to fly, in my opinion). But we weren't home for TV viewing last night for the season finale, which is waiting for us on the recorder.

Here's the problem though: News outlets consider the results fair game for reporting now that the show has aired. And I inadvertently exposed myself to the one piece of information that will drain any possible drama out of the finale for me. And I'm not sure that I can watch two hours of fake drama leading up to the grand revelation that ventriloquist Terry Fator is the big winner. This happened to me the last time I cared enough to follow a season of "The Amazing Race", and I never bothered to watch that last episode because of it.
Soundtrack from My Morning Walk

At last a pleasant day for walking, albeit with fog cutting visibility to nothing. A black cat standing in the ditch made eye contact with me on the way out, and again on the way back, still standing in the same spot (so far as I could tell).
