"Beka shouldn't collect 20th-century rock. That's ten times more ridiculous than everyone in Star Trek being obsessed with Westerns, Shakespeare, and Captain Proton. Where's the post-World War Three Reconstructionist literature? The frontier legends of colonial Mars? The innovative fusions of Terran and Vulcan music that emerged in the 2100s (or should have)? All too often, Star Trek implies that human culture and creativity ceased completely at the dawn of the 21st century, and all subsequent art, music, literature, and drama was either alien (from the one and only culture alloted to each planet) or a revival of something from Old Earth.
But when we're talking about something like post-Commonwealth civilization, the remnants of a mostly-Vedran culture that thrived for thousands of years and to which Earth was just one contributor for three millennia after the present, the odds that any given human who wasn't an antiquities scholar would've even heard of rock and roll are astronomically slim. How versed are you in the musical styles of the waning days of the Shang Dynasty? Do you get your groove on listening to the songs that the young people of Israel were listening to during the reign of King David? (Not to mention that musical tastes 3000 years from now would have changed so radically, particularly with alien influences, that 20th-century rock would seem incomprehensible.)"
