Amazing power of language

Recently (okay, not really just recently, it's been going on for months) Jackson has been really wiggly during diaper changes. He doesn't like to lay still long enough for me to remove the wet one, wipe him down if necessary, and then strap a clean one on him and then redress him. This usually resulted in a half naked child running around the house and diaper changes that took a quarter hour or more. And for the most part that was fine, but sometimes I just want to do it and get it over with because I have other shit that needs to get done.

But last night I had an epiphany. This kid KNOWS what I'm saying. I can't believe he knows as much as he does. But I started explaining "We're going to change your diaper. Now I'm going to lay you down and now we're taking off your pants. Now I just have to undo your onesie, and now off comes the diaper. Oh, that's very full. Now we've just got to get this one on. Four snaps now. One, Two. Okay, just these two over here now. Three, four. Great! Now we're going to snap up your onesie, one, two, three, and now we'll put on your pants. Ready, one leg. Two legs. Now let's stand up and pull those up. GREAT! ALL DONE!"

And holy crap, he actually was still for the entire time! He wasn't trying to roll over or crawl away or kick me or gum on the wipes or anything! And he's started following directions when I talk to him. I assume this is a normal part of development, and I guess it makes sense that over the past 14 months that he's picked up a fair amount of our language, but DAMN! I can't believe how well he understands! It's amazing to me.

Now if he'd just start talking and telling me what he wants instead of saying "UGH." for everything we'd be golden.
