"David Bowie, The Clash, Oasis, Coldplay and The Streets are amongst 25 acts vying for a new award in this year’s Brits ceremony that will crown the best British song since 1977. The list of 25 was unveiled today (January 2) and it will be whittled down to five by listeners to BBC Radio 2. The five will be revealed on January 10 when the Brits nominations are announced. The ceremony is held on February 20. The award has been introduced to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Brit awards."
Here's the full list of nominees. The songs that I think deserve to be in the list are in bold type:
‘Heroes’ by David Bowie
‘We Are The Champions’ by Queen
‘Wuthering Heights’ by Kate Bush
‘Night Fever’ by Bee Gees
‘London Calling’ by The Clash
‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’ by Joy Division
‘That's Entertainment’ by The Jam
‘I Don't Want To Talk About It’ by Rod Stewart
‘Look of Love’ by ABC
‘Golden Brown’ by The Stranglers
‘True’ by Spandau Ballet
‘Careless Whisper’ by George Michael
‘Holding Back The Years’ by Simply Red
‘Sledgehammer’ by Peter Gabriel
‘Sacrifice’ by Elton John
‘Unfinished Sympathy’ by Massive Attack
‘Why’ by Annie Lennox
‘Fields of Gold’ by Sting
‘Kiss From A Rose’ by Seal
‘Wonderwall’ by Oasis
‘Angels’ by Robbie Williams
‘Yellow’ by Coldplay
‘Babylon’ by David Gray
‘Leave Right Now’ by Will Young
‘Dry Your Eyes’ by The Streets
The majority of the list is made up of good songs but they're simply not classics and whoever decided that The Streets should be in there should be shot immediately! Going on the list, my vote would have to go to "Heroes" by David Bowie. Putting the others in the shade, it's an awesome song with an optimistic outlook on life. :)
