Riverdance: The Farewell Tour!

Dec 16, 2010 01:41

I know this is a bit late, but I meant to update sooner. Last week, on the 11th of December 2010, I went to watch Riverdance in Singapore for the second time at the Sands Theatre. The first time was about 10 or 12 years ago? It's been so long that I can't really remember how old I was. All I remember was that I really enjoyed it, and whenever someone asked me what the best dance show I've ever watched was, I would say it's Riverdance.

When I saw that it would be their farewell tour, I quickly bought the ticket because this would be the last time I can ever catch them live! And of course, they did not disappoint. I detected slight changes to the dance sequences and the lead dancers were different from 10 years ago (understandably) but the show overall was the same. In fact, I enjoyed this second time even more than the first because I've learnt to appreciate dance and art more now that I've become a dancer myself. This is especially true for the flamenco segments of the show, which was one of my favourites.

In this video, Maria Pages was the dancer but at the Singapore show, it was a woman by the name of Rocio Montoya. I'd watched Maria Pages live before, in her collaboration show with Sidi called Dunas at the Esplanade, and the original choreography in Riverdance was co-choreographed by her. However, I preferred Rocio Montoya's style of dancing which was more fluid and soft. While Maria Pages is in a class of her own, I truly loved Montoya's grace and feminity in her dancing. I've never seen flamenco done that softly before! I was an instant fan of hers and I will never ever forget her performance that night.

Another favourite segment of mine was Thunderstorm. I love the strength of this piece!

I'm really saddened by the fact that this is their farewell tour, because Riverdance is such a gem. Despite it being a little commercialised, I feel that I'm truly blessed to have been able to watch them twice in my life as the show is such an inspirational one.
