Yay! I can be useful in fulfilling my obligations as fandom peddler :)
Okay, the first 8 or 9 episodes are a bit... uneven. At this point, I feel like the show was still settling into its emotional groove, and still deciding how/what/when we would learn about the boys' physical/emotional pasts. That isn't to say that there aren't some good eps in the mix: Skin and Bloody Mary stand out, mainly for the insights offered into Sam and Dean's psyche.
In fact, that is the draw of the show IMO -- the monsters/effects are all okay, but it's the inter- and intra-personal dynamic that keeps me watching (and that makes Dean my favorite -- who can resist posturing and an almost charicature-esque facade used to hide a tender, gooey center? Poor lad, he's like an upended armadillo at times.)
I suggest you watch: Skin Home (9) Asylum (10) Scarecrow (11) Faith (12) Nightmares (14) Shadow (16) Something Wicked (18) Salvation (21)
Then, if you are compelled (and I hope you will be!) go back and watch the rest, like icing filling up the gaps in a lumpy-but-still-delicious cake ;)As I said, my undisguised bias is for Dean, for reasons that I think come through in these episodes...
Let me know if there are other questions I an answer or suggestions I can make.
