this Kenneth A. Purington of Candia NH, died at the Hanover Hill Health Care Center in Manchester, on October 12, 2008. Born in Epping, NH on April 3, 1926, he was the oldest son of Herman and Ruth (Lindholm) Purington.
During high school he worked for his father at his Chevrolet dealership, Candia Motor Sales. After graduation from Central High School in Manchester, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and saw action in the Pacific theater. He later served for a second time during the Korean War.
For several years he owned a bottled gas and appliance business in Candia, then moved, with his family to Tempe, Arizona, where he worked at Arizona State University. Returning to New Hampshire, they lived in Northfield for twenty years and Ken worked as a pipe fitter on large construction projects in Maine, Massachusetts’ and New Hampshire. He was a long time member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Union, Local #131.
In 1983, he returned to Candia where he joined the Candia Historical Society and became a 50 year member of the Rockingham Masonic Lodge. He was also a valued supporter of the Fitts Museum. A long time member of the Candia Fire Department; he also served for a time as a police officer for the town.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years Dorothy Foster Purington, two sons Kenneth Purington II of Candia, Eric Purington of Cliff, New Mexico, a daughter Tracy Bascom of Belmont, NH, and two grandchildren’ Rachel and Alexander Bascom, of Belmont. He is also survived by two brothers, Richard Purington of Belmont, NH and Herman Purington of Candia, NH.
The Maiden Petrin Funeral Home is handling private family arrangements.
