chocolate

I had thought to use this journal as a place to keep track of interesting things to read. But it's a convenient place to put random other things. And really, with the stir in lj, fic-type things may have a better home elsewhere.

Anyway, I bought a selection of milk chocolate. This will be my review of them.

I bought five bars of milk chocolate. I try only to buy chocolate that uses real vanilla - not vanillan or other artificial flavors. Also, I usually stay away from chocolates that include hazelnuts or barley/malt. These bars can taste quite lovely, but I wanted to taste just the chocolate (and the milk, of course. I will eat dark chocolate, but I prefer the softer taste that milk gives.)
Godiva is the only one here that doesn't list the cocoa content. They are listed alphabetically.

Godiva Chocoiste (G): Warm, sweet, smooth. Mellow, malty, vanilla finish.
Green & Black's Milk (37%) (GB): Nutty (almond?) taste. Not very sweet. An almost bitter finish reminiscent of almond skins.
Michel Cluizel Grand Lait 45% (MC): Fruity notes. Berry?
Valrhona Le Lacte (40%) (V): Smooth, thin mouthfeel. Cool caramel.
Olivier Selection Intense Au Lait (41%) (O): Creamy mouthfeel. Cool, milky taste.

From best to worst, I rank them: G, MC, V, O,GB

The G has the creaminess that I like, but I would prefer a little less malt flavor. The MC certainly was intriguing. This one, more than the others, reminds me of those single origin chocolates. It stands out for going beyond milk and cream flavors. The V's caramel flavor may be a result of the brown sugar in the recipe - it's the only one of this bunch that uses this. O's chocolate flavor seemed muted, covered up by milk. The GB is ranked last because of the strange bitterness.

I am surprised by the GB ranking. I have had the V and the GB before, though not at the same time. I would have said GB is one of my favorites. And I did not care very much for the V. But, the GB seems to have a very odd taste. Is it possible for it to be off? Handled badly, perhaps? I may try it again at a later date because I don't recall it tasting like this the other times I've had it.
The V tastes better than I remember, but I may simply be trying for a little more objectivity and descriptiveness today. I may not have liked it before because it is very thin on the tongue, almost watery, and I do like my milk chocolate to be creamy.
