Lieutenant Zelenka stood in front of the mirror, adjusting his tie one last time before he turned to face the other man in the room with him. He stood at military attention as Colonel Dolezal inspected him in his civilian suit. Absently he thought the suit must have cost the equivalent to several months of his pay.
“Very good, Lieutenant, you look very handsome in that suit. I knew there was a reason we did not require you to cut your hair to military regulations. Do you have your kit ready?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Good,” Colonel Dolezal turned to look out the window to the hotel across the street. “Your target may only be an aide, but they have been known to talk in the privacy of their rooms. We know that their security swept the rooms for bugs and found what they expected. Intelligence is a delicate dance. They expect surveillance devices in their rooms, so we plant them in the rooms to be found. Now is when the dance becomes complicated. We must place new devices to replace the ones they found.
"You are not yet experienced enough to try to infiltrate the rooms of the higher-ranked members of the diplomatic entourage. This is why your target is an aide. Take the time you need to make entry to her room, and use whatever non-lethal means you deem necessary, we do not need a diplomatic incident,” he glanced at Zelenka. “With your looks, seduction is an option. Remember, use every tool you have available to you.”
“Yes, sir. I will not disappoint you, sir.”
“See that you don’t, Lieutenant,” he said with a slightly menacing tone. He turned from the window to face Zelenka. “Dismissed.”
Lieutenant Zelenka snapped a salute and turned to leave after Colonel Dolezal returned the salute. His military posture evaporated as he walked out the door, looking like a well-off young man out for an evening.

Zelenka walked down the street before crossing, not daring to cross directly from the building that held the observation post to the plush hotel where most diplomats and foreigners stayed when visiting Prague. The walk gave Zelenka a chance to focus on his assignment, his mission. Make contact with his target, gain access to her room, plant the listening devices, and leave. A simple task, he told himself. Despite his training in the intelligence service, this was his first field assignment. His looks were what earned him this assignment instead of building surveillance devices or manning an observation post. He took a deep breath and collected himself as he approached the hotel steps.
He walked up the steps and through the elaborate doors. The hotel boasted a fine restaurant, frequented by the wealthy of Prague and foreigners alike. He casually walked through the lobby and went to the restaurant.
He surveyed the patrons before he saw his target, a young woman with wavy auburn hair hanging loose just below her shoulders sitting alone at the bar, delicately sipping a glass of wine. He paused as he confirmed that she was indeed his target. The photograph did not do her justice, he thought and quickly pushed the thought out of his mind. He had a job to do, that’s all it was. He casually walked over to the bar and sat a couple seats away since the bar was not crowded. He did not want to move too fast, to make her suspicious since she would probably be suspicious of anyone a member of the American diplomatic team.
He ordered a beer, and the bartender nodded, an intelligence agent himself. The beer Zelenka was given was watered down so he would not have to worry about becoming drunk. He sipped his beer absently for a few minutes, fighting a grimace at the weak flavor. When the woman inquired about the menu he listened intently.
“Please, forgive me if I am intruding,” Zelenka said pleasantly, “Are you here alone?”
“Yes, I am dining alone,” she said through a smile, a hint of caution in her voice.
“Ah, I have been rude. I am Radek, and I would be honored if you would join me for dinner tonight. I, too, am here alone.” He smiled shyly at her, noting the blush in her cheeks due to the alcohol.
She seemed to consider him for a moment before speaking. “Elizabeth. And I would enjoy some company over dinner.”
Radek extended his arm like a true gentleman, and Elizabeth took it. He led them to a more private booth and took a seat after Elizabeth took hers. A few moments later, a waiter appeared with menus for them.
“A bottle of your finest wine, please,” Radek ordered in Czech.
“Of course, sir,” the waiter replied and left.
“A bottle of the finest?” Elizabeth asked with a smile, sipping the last of the wine in her glass.
“You speak Czech?” Radek asked with surprise.
“I learned it for this trip. While visiting your lovely country I didn’t want to be one of those obnoxious tourists who can’t speak the local language.”
“So your visit is pleasure, not business?”
Elizabeth hesitated a moment. “Yes, I’m here on pleasure. I wanted to take a tour of your beautiful country. I must say, the brochures don’t do it justice. Now what about you, what’s your story?”
“Ah, I study and teach at the University. I am, how do you say, graduate student. I teach the, uh, undergraduate students,” he feigned imperfect English, although he could speak it and several other languages perfectly. “I am studying mathematics.” The half-truths easily rolled off his tongue.
The waiter returned with the wine and poured each of them a glass, then gave them more time to look over the menu. Elizabeth was baffled by the choices and finally decided to let Radek order for her.
They continued to make small talk over dinner, discussing whatever came to mind. Radek made sure both Elizabeth’s and his wine glass stayed full throughout dinner. Elizabeth laughed more loudly at Radek’s witty comments as dinner progressed, and Radek was sure that if she wasn't intoxicated, she was at least feeling quite relaxed. Radek mimicked her state, amused at the low alcohol tolerance of Americans.
After they finished the main course Elizabeth excused herself. Radek assumed she was visiting the Ladies’ Room, which gave him time to make his next move. He pulled a small packet of powder from his jacket pocket and emptied it into her glass, swirling it to fully dissolve the powder. He topped off both of their glasses then waived the waiter over to clear their plates. He ordered dessert for both of them, which was being served when Elizabeth returned.
Radek stood as Elizabeth took her seat. “Ah, I took the liberty of ordering dessert for us. I hope you enjoy it.”
“It looks delicious. If it's anything like what you ordered for dinner, I know I’ll enjoy it immensely.”
“To your health,” Radek said as he lifted his glass.
“Cheers,” Elizabeth said in response as they touched their glasses and each took a sip.
They talked some more over dessert, Elizabeth becoming truly giddy as the alcohol and drug took effect. Radek paid for dinner, despite Elizabeth’s half-hearted protests. He suggested that since it was still early in the evening that they might take in a show at a nearby theater. Elizabeth agreed readily, and Radek stood, offering his hand to Elizabeth as she stood up. She stumbled, leaning against Radek, her warm body pressing close as she struggled to regain her balance.
“Oh my, I think I may have had too much wine,” she giggled.
Radek chuckled with her as they both swayed.
“I think we both had too much good wine. Please allow me to escort you to your room.”
Elizabeth giggled again and leaned against Radek as they walked out of the restaurant to the elevator. She continued to lean against Radek as she pressed the button to the floor her room was on. Radek continued act slightly drunk yet the perfect gentleman, escorting a lady back to her room. When they reached her door she fumbled for her key before opening the door.
Radek followed her inside, steadying her as she swayed and closed the door behind them. The drug was in full effect. She would remember nothing until it wore off. Radek led her to the bed and urged her to sit down. Now he only had to wait a few moments until she fell asleep so he could finish his task.
Radek was shocked when Elizabeth reached out and grasped Radek’s hand, silently urging him to sit next to her on the bed, sliding next to him until her thigh touched his. She gently grasped one of his shoulders with one hand, pulling him in for a kiss, while the fingers of her other hand danced along his leg. A small moan escaped from Radek’s throat as he returned her kiss.
“You are so handsome, Radek,” she said as she broke the kiss.
“And you, Elizabeth, are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.”
He hadn’t planned on using seduction, but then he hadn’t anticipated his target, Elizabeth, being so forward. Radek had heard stories of decadent American women, but had never met one. He kissed her again, deciding to use the leeway he’d been given to satisfy his personal wants and desires. He curled his hand in her hair, wrapping the other around her waist, slipping it under the hem of her shirt, pulling her closer.
He grew bolder at her reactions, at how her fingers traveled from the top to the inside of his thigh, her intent clear. As they continued to kiss Radek found the zipper at the back of her skirt and slid it down, his fingers trailing down her spine, feeling the shiver that ran through her body. He then traced the curve of her hip and leg, down to the hem of her skirt, and slid his hand up her leg under the fabric. Elizabeth broke the kiss and sighed, tilting her head back, exposing her neck to him.
Radek kissed his way down her neck, sucking gently, careful to not leave any marks. Elizabeth encouraged him, pushing his jacket off his shoulders then fumbling at his tie and the buttons on his shirt. He helped her and they quickly worked their clothing free, eager for the feel of flesh on flesh. Radek kissed his way down to her breasts, suckling on a nipple, teasing the other with his nimble fingers. She arched into his touch, grinding her pelvis against his hardness. He pulled away and took the other nipple in his mouth, rolling the hard nub around with his tongue while he cupped her other breast in his hand, gently kneading and teasing.
Radek pulled away from her breasts with one last flick of his tongue and kissed his way back up to her mouth, capturing her lips again as he reached a hand between them, feeling her moist folds. She gasped as he teased her, sliding a finger inside her, slowly stroking her.
“Please,” she gasped, emphasizing her want, her need, as she clutched at his back. “I want you, all of you, now.”
“One moment, Eliška,” he said as he kissed her.
Radek pulled away long enough to find the condom in the pocket of his trousers and hurried to put it on. Elizabeth ran her fingers through the hair on his chest, brushing over his nipples, causing his breath to hitch. Radek took a deep, steadying breath or else he wouldn’t last very long. This woman was more than he had expected, more aggressive, and it had been such a long time since he’d been with a woman. He could take her fast and hard, impersonal, just a fuck as a part of a job, but he wanted to make sure she enjoyed it as much as he would.
Radek leaned over her again and kissed her as he positioned himself and slowly pressed inside her. Elizabeth wrapped her legs around his waist, pulling him in deeper, her head thrown back wantonly. He began to thrust, each movement eliciting a moan from her lips swollen from kissing. He leaned against her, pressing her down with his weight, capturing each delicious noise she made in his mouth. Radek relished the knowledge that he was the one responsible for each incoherent sound she made, every writhing movement under him. He ignored the fact the drug he gave her had lowered her inhibitions quite a bit. He didn’t want to think about what that meant.
He felt her tense under him, her fingers digging into his back, her internal muscles clamping around him. Radek moaned something that may have been a curse or a prayer, he didn’t know which, as his own orgasm coursed through his body. He lay limp on top of her until he could catch his breath then rolled off of her and sat on the side of the bed. He removed the condom, placing it in a plastic bag so he could dispose of it somewhere else. He could not risk leaving any evidence of his presence in her room.
Radek looked at Elizabeth and caressed her cheek. Between the alcohol, the drug, and the sex, she would be asleep for several hours and not remember any details of the night. Radek saw a nightgown hanging on the bathroom door and carefully slipped it on her before pulling the covers down and sliding her between the sheets. He sat a glass of water on the nightstand for her and the hangover she would undoubtedly have in the morning. He could at least leave her with her dignity.
Radek quickly dressed and went to work, trying to ignore the sleeping form on the bed. He pulled the small toolkit out of his jacket and the listening devices. He efficiently installed one in a wall outlet and one in the radio on the nightstand. He put his kit away and surveyed the room, making sure nothing was out of place, that there was no trace that he had ever been in the room.
“Test. One, two, three,” he said in a normal voice.
Radek stepped over to the bed again, leaned down, and kissed her gently on the cheek.
“Goodnight, beautiful Elizabeth. Perhaps, someday, we will meet again,” he whispered into her ear.
Radek left the room and locked it from the outside with the duplicate key he’d been given as a part of his assignment. He leaned against the wall for a moment, telling himself what he did was his duty to his country. She was a target, nothing more. He hoped if he told himself that enough he would finally believe it.

Lieutenant Zelenka left the hotel and took a different route back to the building where the listening post was located, using the time to once again calm himself. He went to the room where the technicians had their equipment set up and knocked in a distinct pattern. The door opened and Lieutenant Zelenka stepped inside. Technicians sat at their equipment, listening to the sounds his transmitters were sending, recording every second for later analysis.
He turned to face Colonel Dolezal, standing at attention.
“We received your test, both recorders are working. Very good, Lieutenant.”
“Thank you, sir.”
“Give me a preliminary report.”
“The target was in the hotel restaurant, as we suspected since she had not left the hotel, according to our sources. She was sitting alone at the bar, so I took a seat nearby, and ordered a beer. I waited several minutes before making contact, and offered to buy her dinner. She accepted my offer and we had a full-course dinner at one of the more private booths. She seemed suspicious of me at first, but accepted my story that I was a graduate student at the University. She claimed to be a tourist. During dinner, she left the table to use the ladies’ room and the drug you gave me was very useful. I put it in her wine and she suspected nothing. She believed she was intoxicated from the alcohol, and I played the gentleman and escorted her to her room as she was unsteady, as expected. Once in her room she soon fell asleep and I was able to install the listening devices. I locked the door using the room key I was provided.”
Colonel Dolezal produced a photograph. “And you are sure that this was your target.”
Lieutenant Zelenka looked at the photograph, and its label of “Elizabeth Weir, Ambassadorial Assistant”.
“Yes, sir. That is the woman whose room I planted the devices in.”
“Excellent job tonight, Lieutenant. You have served the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic well. You are dismissed for the night. Report as usual tomorrow.”
“Thank you, sir,” Zelenka said as he saluted the colonel.
Colonel Dolezal saluted him in return then turned to the technicians. Zelenka left the small room.

As he walked to his apartment, Radek thought about Elizabeth. He wished the photograph had not been labeled with her full name, he’d hoped she could remain an anonymous Elizabeth with no surname. He tried to push her face from his mind, but it was no use. He didn’t know why he had omitted the half-truth that he had seduced her so he could stay in her room longer. It was expected, after all.
The truth was he felt like the one who was seduced. He knew there would be other assignments in the future, but he knew he would never be able to erase her face from his memory. He would remember her face as he fucked, no, made love to her until the day he died. Knowing she enjoyed it as much as he did, even if she would never remember the encounter, eased his guilt somewhat.
Radek took the long way home as he contemplated the events of the evening.

Doctor Radek Zelenka sat in the conference room of Stargate Command, signing non-disclosure agreements. He knew he was joining an international research team, and the entire thing was highly classified. He was honored that the Czech Republic recommended him and that he was accepted. He had a feeling that it would be beyond anything he had ever worked on before and was excited by the prospect. He looked up when Doctor Rodney McKay, the Chief Scientist of the project entered the room.
“Ah, Doctor, uh, Zalenky.”
“Zelenka,” he corrected.
“Yes, yes. Doctor Zelenka, I see you’re finished with the paperwork. Good. I’d like you to meet the leader of the project, Doctor Elizabeth Weir.”
The military training that part of him had never forgotten prevented him from showing the shock he felt as Doctor Weir, Elizabeth, entered the room. He stood to shake her hand.
“Pleased to meet you, Doctor Zelenka, and I’m glad you decided to join the project. Once we make sure your paperwork is in order, Doctor McKay will fill you in on the details.” She held out her hand.
Radek inwardly sighed in relief as she showed no sign of recognition. It took every ounce of discipline he had to not tremble as he shook her hand. He would have recognized her despite the years that have passed. They treated her kindly, he thought absently before the old pang of guilt that he had managed to bury years ago resurfaced. At that moment he resolved to do anything she needed of him, to try to erase the sins of his past.

Radek stood on the balcony outside Atlantis’s control room, trying to calm himself after the latest near-death experience with the Wraith. Elizabeth had looked so vulnerable after everything that had happened and it triggered the old guilt. The combination overwhelmed him, so he sought some quiet. He sighed when he heard the balcony doors open. He could guess who it was.
“Radek? What’s wrong?” Elizabeth asked.
He shook his head and continued to stare out over the city. “Just the usual near-death at the hands of the Wraith. This is becoming a bad habit.”
Out of the corner of his eye he saw Elizabeth lean against the rail beside him.
“Radek, we’ve known each other for several years now. I know something else is bothering you. You should know by now that whatever it is, you can tell me.”
Radek slipped his glasses off and pinched the bridge of his nose, sighing. When had he become so transparent?
“No, I’m afraid this particular burden is mine to bear alone.” He knew there was no use in denying that something else was eating at him. He could only hope that she would not attempt to pry the truth out of him because he knew he would break.
Elizabeth put her hand on his shoulder. “Radek, we can only survive if we share our burdens.”
Radek bowed his head, knowing Elizabeth would not leave it be. “Not here. Someplace more private, please.”
“Alright, come with me, then.”
Radek slid his glasses back on and followed Elizabeth. He didn’t pay any attention to where they were headed, he simply walked, lost in his own thoughts. He tried to calm himself, telling himself he could do this. When they stopped he realized they were outside Elizabeth’s quarters. He fought back a surge of panic when Elizabeth entered before he followed.
Radek sat down in one of the chairs and pulled his glasses back off, burying his face in his hands. He could do this, he had to do this, to clear his conscience. Elizabeth pulled a chair close and sat down, resting her hand on his shoulder again, trying to comfort him, completely unaware that her touch only made it worse.
“Radek?” she asked softly. “Tell me.”
Radek took a shuddering breath. “You remember the diplomatic mission to Prague you were a part of about fifteen years ago?”
“Yes,” she said slowly. “How did you…”
He cut her off. “You met a young man in the hotel restaurant one evening and had dinner with him.”
Elizabeth’s eyes widened. “That was you! I remember our dinner as being very pleasant.”
He looked up at her, his vision slightly blurred without his glasses. “Yes. Now, please, I must tell you the rest without stopping. I must make a confession. I was a Lieutenant in the Czechoslovakian Army, the intelligence service. You were my assignment. I was to make contact with you, find a way into your room and plant listening devices without your knowledge. You accepted my invitation to dinner and it was indeed pleasant. You drank too much wine, which worked to my advantage. After the main course, when you left the table I put a drug in your wine. I do not know what it was. I was never told and I never asked. All I know is it would prevent you from remembering anything after you ingested it and make you fall asleep. The drug was simply another tool to use to accomplish my…mission. You drank the drugged wine, which made it seem like you were quite intoxicated. I acted like I was slightly drunk myself, as to not arouse suspicion. Like a proper gentleman, I escorted you to your room since you were unsteady on your feet. You unlocked the door to your room and I went inside with you. I…I am sorry, this is difficult for me. I planned on allowing you to fall asleep before I planted the listening devices. You…you,” Radek sighed, looking at Elizabeth sadly. “I can’t put this delicately. You made a sexual advance and I’m ashamed to say I did not turn you away. You were very insistent and I…we had sex.”
Radek nearly sobbed the words as he continued. “I knew you were under the influence of the drug, but I took advantage of you anyway. I did not hurt you in any way. In fact, you enjoyed yourself very much. I made sure of that. Afterwards you fell asleep which is when I dressed you in your nightgown and put you under the covers. I dressed and completed my task, I hid the listening devices and locked your door with a key I had been given for that assignment.
“I am so sorry for what I did, and I know you have only my word that I did not hurt you. I will resign and return to Earth if you wish. I understand completely if you want to never see me again.” Radek wiped the tears from his eyes and put his glasses back on so he could clearly see Elizabeth’s reaction.
Elizabeth’s hand had not moved from his shoulder during his entire confession. Radek could not tell what Elizabeth was thinking, her face was a mix of emotions. He felt her squeeze his shoulder as she drew a breath.
“Radek, you didn’t ask for it, but I forgive you. That was fifteen years ago and in a completely different era. It was the Cold War and you did what you had to, what you were ordered to. I always assumed we slept together, even if I couldn’t remember it,” Elizabeth said quietly as she cupped his cheek in her hand. “I want you to forgive yourself. I will not accept your resignation, you’re too valuable to Atlantis. And I value you as a friend too much to see you leave.”
Radek couldn’t believe what he had just heard. It was more than he had dared to hope for. Elizabeth was smiling reassuringly as he processed what it meant. He could stay on Atlantis and Elizabeth still wanted his friendship. He returned her smile, fighting the tears that threatened to fall again.
“Radek, I want you to do something for me,” she said softly, stroking his cheek with her thumb.
“Anything, Elizabeth.”
“I want you to show me, to do to me what you did in my room that night.”
“What?”
Radek sat frozen as Elizabeth leaned forward and kissed him, her tongue brushing his lips. She pulled away and stared into his eyes.
“I want you to do to me now what you did fifteen years ago. I want to know what it was like, being with you.”
Radek was stunned by her words and actions. She took his hand and stood, silently urging him to follow her. He did, and she led him to her bed. He sat down next to her, thinking that some things never change. Completely sober and Elizabeth was just as forward as she was all those years ago.
“How did we start?” she asked.
“You ran the fingers from one hand over my thigh and pulled me closer with your other hand on my shoulder. Then you kissed me.”
Elizabeth’s fingers danced over his thigh as she pulled him closer. “You mean like this,” she breathed into his ear before kissing him deeply.
Radek returned the kiss knowing there was no stopping Elizabeth when she was determined. He never thought he’d feel her intimate touch again, her lips against his. He slid his hand under her shirt, tickling her spine and tangled his other hand in her hair, pulling her closer to him. He broke the kiss reluctantly.
“You were wearing a skirt. I unzipped the back of it then slid my hand across your hip and up under the hem of your skirt.” He mimicked the action through her trousers, stroking her thigh, sliding his hand up her leg.
“And then?” Elizabeth asked huskily.
“We silently decided we were both wearing too many clothes.”
“Then we’ll have to fix that.”
Radek allowed Elizabeth to remove his glasses and put them on the nightstand. She pulled at the hem of his shirt, pulling it up and over his head. He pulled down the zipper at the throat of her own shirt then ran his hands down her torso to the hem of her shirt and pulled it off. The both worked quickly to shed their clothes, hands exploring each other’s bodies.
Radek gently nudged Elizabeth down on her back. He positioned himself over her, nudging her legs apart. He kissed her again, probing her mouth with his tongue, tasting the Athosian tea she’d had earlier. When he broke the kiss, they were both panting. Radek kissed her jaw and slowly made his way down her throat to her breasts. Elizabeth gasped as Radek took one nipple in his mouth, licking, sucking, teasing her while he mimicked his actions with his fingers on her other breast. He then gave the other nipple the same attention with his mouth, relishing every sound he elicited from her.
Radek smiled as Elizabeth arched her back, moaning loudly. He kissed his way back up to her mouth, gently nipping at her neck along the way. The part of his mind that wasn’t completely overcome by lust was thankful for the restraint the extra years gave him this time, the ability to draw out her pleasure longer.
Radek kissed Elizabeth again as he slid his hand between them and between her legs. Hot moisture greeted him. Elizabeth was more than ready for him, but he was determined to draw out the experience as long as possible. He slid a finger inside her while he teased her clit with his thumb. He felt Elizabeth run her hands over his chest, running her hands through his hair. He gasped as she teased his nipples, rubbing and pinching them. Elizabeth then started rubbing her hands over his chest and down his abdomen. He felt one of her hands around his cock and he lost the rhythm he had established.
“Radek, I want to feel you inside me.”
“Condom,” Radek gasped out.
Radek leaned into Elizabeth’s hand as she caressed his cheek.
“I’m on birth control, and I’m clean. Do we really need one, then?”
Radek turned his head and kissed her hand. “No, we don’t.”
Radek shifted over Elizabeth and slowly slid inside her, relishing the feel of bare flesh on flesh. He set an agonizingly slow pace, determined to last as long as possible. Elizabeth thrust her pelvis up to meet each of his thrusts, taking him as deep as possible. He felt her hands wrap around his back, pulling him closer, their bodies intertwined. Radek stared into Elizabeth’s eyes as he truly made love to her, seeing the ecstasy and trust in them. He kissed her and increased his pace as he felt himself approaching climax. Elizabeth threw her head back and let out a series of gasps and moans.
Radek felt her internal muscles clamp down around him and her arms tightened around him. The sensations overwhelmed him as his own climax washed over him, emptying his seed inside Elizabeth.
“Oh, God!” he moaned , burrowing his face in Elizabeth’s shoulder, clutching at her.
He slid out of her and rolled to his side, throwing an arm over Elizabeth protectively, pulling her close. She rolled to her side and gazed at his face. Radek kissed her once tenderly, lazily running his hand over her back and returned her gaze.
“That was wonderful. Thank you,” she sighed.
“No, thank you, Eliška,” he whispered.
Radek felt sleep pulling at him. He got up and went to the bathroom. He returned with a towel, which she gratefully accepted, cleaning herself quickly. Radek pulled the blankets down and Elizabeth shifted so she was between them. Radek reached for his clothes when a hand grasped his wrist.
“Stay,” Elizabeth said sleepily.
Radek simply smiled as he crawled between the sheets, embracing Elizabeth against his chest as she drifted off to sleep. Radek stroked her hair as her breathing evened out. As sleep claimed him, his heart felt lighter than it had in many years.

Characters: Radek Zelenka
Summary: Lieutenant Zelenka watched his target approach.
Word Count: 317
Genre: Drama
Rating: PG-13
Warning: violence
Spoilers/Timeline: Pre-Atlantis
Disclaimer: In an alternate reality, I own the Stargate Franchise. This is not that reality.
Author's Notes: Companion piece to “First Assignment”. Lieutenant Zelenka would not leave me alone! Not beta read, so all mistakes are my own.
Lieutenant Zelenka leaned against the streetlamp on the edge of the river, head bowed against the persistent drizzle, watching his target approach as he attempted to light a cigarette.
“Excuse me,” he called out as he fumbled with the lighter, “Do you have a light? Mine seems to be wet from all this damn rain.”
The man changed his course slightly to walk over to Zelenka. He produced a lighter and lit Zelenka’s cigarette.
“Thanks, friend. Would you like one?” he offered his pack to the other man.
“Yes, I would. Thank you,” he replied and took one of the offered cigarettes and lit it himself.
Zelenka struck without warning, striking the back of the man’s head, knocking him instantly unconscious. He grabbed the satchel hanging from the man’s shoulder as he slid to the ground. Zelenka nudged the limp form with his foot, sending the man sliding down the rain and ice slick rocks to the river below. The Vltava swept the body away in its rain-swollen waters, the ultimate executioner. He noticed dispassionately the blood smear that led to the water’s edge where the man must have struck his head as he fell to the waters below.
The police would find the body and quickly determine the man had accidentally slipped on some ice and drowned in the river. The minimal investigation would be one of the lowest priority. The police had more important things to worry about.
Zelenka casually walked away, adjusting the satchel he now carried, taking it to his superiors. He smoked his cigarette, avoiding a patch of dirty, rain-slick ice as he walked through the increasingly heavy rain. The traitor should have known to be more careful on the still-icy streets of Prague in spring. They held more dangers than most people realized. It was unfortunate the man died a quick and painless death. It was more than the bastard deserved.
