So I've been noticing more and more talk of "true fans" and people who just pose or are "hipster nerds" or whatever and it just kinda bothers me on all sides.
I was recently trying to play a D&D game, and one of the dudes was such a stereotypical neckbeard and kinda mean that it reminded me why I keep most of my nerding these days to when I hang out with Anna... I got sick of having to prove my cred. And I could.
But I'm done with it.
And I get how frustrating it can be deal with these so-called "hipster nerds"- you're so passionate about this interest, and some guy who just heard about it on the internet read some wikipedia and wears a t-shirt. And you want to have a conversation with them, but you can't because they aren't as familiar as you are.
But instead of being an asshole about it, I take it as a time to share what I know and have with that "poser". They end up appreciating it and I get to re-live when I was first getting into that interest/character/series.
I just got my boyfriend into Green Arrow more than I already had and he's gotten me into the Final Fantasy series... and it just makes us happy because we're both re-living when we first got into each interest instead of competing over who is the biggest geek. And you know, I'd rather that than fighting sexism to prove myself worthy of engaging in some obscure game.
