For Valentine's Day, my sweetheart gave me My Mistress's Sparrow Is Dead, a collection of love stories edited by Jeffrey Eugenides. It's a great collection, Chekhov and Faulkner and de Maupassant and Nabakov and Deborah Eisenberg and Malamud and Alice Munro and Eileen Chang and... Well. It's a wonderful present. Here I was trying to complete fics that I had already started, and getting almost nowhere, when an idea for a totally new one-shot popped into my head.  It's short, but rather dense (It'll remind you more of The 312th Edition than of any of my other stories).
