Strategic Fail

Dwarf: But what if the undead come crawling over the rubble behind us, looking for brains?
Spell-casting priest (me): No worries, we don't have any of those.

Last week, my roleplaying group tried to prepare a cave for a fight. It took several hours. Our poor GM occasionally asked, in an increasingly despairing voice, "so what exactly is your plan…?", to which our decisive and eloquent answer was, inevitably, "uhm".

It was so sad, you guys.

  • We sneakily built a Subtle Bulwark™ on one side of the cave to hide behind.
  • We tore down some walls and moved around various heaps of rubble for various purposes.
  • We abandoned the Extremely Obvious Subtle Bulwark™ and built a smaller hiding place in a different spot.
  • We built a fake camping site to attract and distract the bad guys when they came in.
  • (Unfortunately it was right next to the smaller hide-out.)
  • We contemplated building some kind of "falling rocks"-trap, but lacked the materials and the skills. Needless to say, it would also have been immensely obvious.
  • We contemplated building a pit, but ended up not doing so for Reasons.
  • We convinced the dwarf not to poison the documents in the fake campsite. Especially since we did not have a contact poison, and the documents were on loan.
  • We hid in a side-cave, hoping the enemy would assume we were in our Extremely Obvious Subtle Bulwark™.
  • Our warrior righteously lit his sword on fire* as soon as the enemies came in. This gave away our position a teensy bit.

* He was very apologetic about this, but it honestly did not make a difference given the general brilliance of our plan.

This planning malaise cannot go on.

Does anyone have recommendations on teaching material about strategy and combat tactics - preferably applicable for small-ish groups?
