Uh, what sort of job requires you to take a 14 week class that costs $5000, so you can work on a train in some position that my father didn't know. Literally, thats all I know about the job. Oh, and that it pays $100k a year. Uh, any clue, or is someone pulling my ( Read more... )

I think your father has got some wrong info.

I don't know of any RR that would make prospective employees lay out cash for train, and if they did, certainly not that amount. I also don't know of any train based job that starts at ~$100k. :=3

The job page is: https://careers.csx.com/psp/ERECRUIT/EMPLOYEE/HRMS/c/ROLE_APPLICANT.ER_APPLICANT_HOME.GBL?NAVSTACK=Clear

After looking at some of the jobs, there are none listed that are train based and none, that I looked at, give a salary in that range.

You might want to get your dad to get more info.

Perhaps as a fireman? Trains don't have cabooses anymore, just engineers and firemen.

Techincally they don't have firmen either.

Most frieght operations only have to men crews: conductors and engineers. When they do have more than two men, the other men are known as "train men".

When the diesels fully took over and there were still two men in the cab "Fireman" held on due to habit, but he was actually a "locomotive helper".

In most passenger operations there is only the engineer in the cab now.

Anyway, as I haad stated, I don't believe that there is any craft oriented, or other entry-level position on any RR that starts you out at 100k per year. Enginneers start in the $30k- $40k/ year range.
