I went out to see X-Men: First Class last night, which was a wonderfully fun time in and of itself. I enjoyed the movie! As is easy to tell from the previews it is, indeed, slashy like whoah.
Because totally platonic friends share a bed while out at a strip club. SO HETEROSEXUAL. That whole recruitment sequence. Wow. And based on McAvoy's comments in
this interview I'm desperately hoping for cut scenes in the future DVD.
Anyway, it's not the best X-Men movie, that's for sure. But it was certainly leaps and bounds better than X3 and Wolverine. Although it did have a distinct lack of shirtlessness. So Wolverine has the edge there.
I've been severely out of the loop when it comes to X-Men so I had heard no spoilers, casting or otherwise, for this movie. Hugh Jackman turned up unexpectedly to deliver the best line of the film, and that was glorious. THANK YOU, HUGH JACKMAN. BE IN ALL MOVIES EVER PLEASE. Even the one with the fighting robots that I'll go see. Damn you.
Overall, the movie did play pretty fast and loose with canon, plot, continuity, and other things. But I think it got the feel of the characters down. And I'm one who readily and happily will fill in my own blanks, so that didn't bother me. There was a lot of suspension of disbelief though. Turns out I can't see Kevin Bacon as anyone except Kevin Bacon. Which makes him rather silly to watch when he's wearing Magneto's helmet and being all evil-like. But yes, in general quite good. Would watch again.
