They had been a musical family. Touya had loved the soft sounds of piano and violin each night. Sometimes he would sneak to the stairs and listen as his mother's hands played over the keyboard and his father's fingers masterfully guided the bow.
He'd wanted to play too, and he was so excited when Mother began to teach him her special song. After she was gone, his father hired someone to teach him, but he stopped going. It wasn't the same.
Some nights when he couldn't sleep and his heart was full of her, Touya sneaked down to the stairs and listened to his father as he played the violin in the dark. It was an instrument made to play sadness, Touya thought. His father had played it joyfully with Nadeshiko, but it was still an instrument to mourn with.
Touya came into the kitchen one morning and the case was still on the table. He opened it and stroked the smooth wood, thinking of late nights when he would fall asleep with his head resting against the banister, listening, and yet somehow he would wake in the morning in his own bed, and his mother would be smiling.
"Would you like to learn?" Fugitaka asked. Touya turned, startled, and Fugitaka smiled, like he always did, but there was an edge of sadness in it.
"I would," Touya said, and that next year he played a tune for Nadeshiko at her grave.
