Review of peganthyrus

Jan 30, 2005 14:47

This is my first review in far too long, so apologies if I'm a bit rusty.

peganthyrus specifically requested a review of only public entries, so here goes.

Main: 39/50

Intelligence: 8/10
Most indication of intelligence came from some very well written entries. However, the thing that impressed me the most was pegantyrus' desire to create a style that uses correct markup and displays well in Lynx. As such, she has designed her own S2 style, which considering the S2 style system is no small feat. The entries about the design and the things she found along the way interested me greatly. Most of the entries, particularly the long ones, were interesting; however there were other entries that were of absolutely no interest me and that I found quite pointless and boring. But isn't that always the case?

Emotional Value: 6/10.
For the most part the entries didn't cause me to have any kind of emotional reaction. There were some that had emotional content, and while I found them interesting, they never touched me personally. But they were emotional and showed that peganthyrus can and does write emotional entries. I have a feeling that were I to read back a lot further, I would come across more emotional entries.

Creativity: 9/10.
I've mentioned the custom style already. I have to say that I don't actually like the style that much. However, the colours go well together and I appreciate the simplicity of it. In real life peganthyrus is an artist/animator. She posts a lot of sketches; some good others not so good (but then, I'm not the best judge of art as I don't have an artistic bone in my body). She definitely seems to have some fans out there, so she must be good!

Individuality: 8/10.
There is certainly no-one in my personal circle of friends who is anything like peganthyrus (and while that isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's not necessarily a good thing either). She is a pink-haired, artistic, transexual mac-user. Although I think that is nowhere near enough to sum her up. But then I suppose a lot of the journal is fairly "normal". Posts about time spent with friends, trips home to see the family at Christmas, links she has found and the pictures she has drawn. But they are different enough to be interesting.

Courtesy and Grammar: 8/10.
For the most part images are under an lj-cut, although a few times they weren't. Although often the lj-cut text isn't very helpful. Subjects are included, but again aren't all that helpful. Except for a few posts where she missed out capital letters, the spelling and grammar was good. No "lolz" or "OMG"s. And comments were responded to, with often long conversations resulting.

Sub-categories: 39/50.

Bio: 4/5.
The bio is full of short and sweet sentences, sometimes linking to relevant websites. A small section about herself, a request for readers to comment so she knows who's reading, a creative commons license, and a little explanation of the style. It's nice and brief, but doesn't give any indication of how well written or interesting the entries will be.

User Pics: 4/5.
Lots and lots of user pictures. Mostly arty, one photo of her, and a very cool image from the drawing software she tends to use. The arty ones aren't in a style I particularly like, but that's just my taste. There's nothing special done to any of the images; no weird borders or fancy text or anything like that. They're plain and simple, well-cropped images.

Contactability: 5/5.
Website, email, AOL, comments.

Impression: 4/5.
I really liked what I saw of peganthyrus. I don't think this is a journal that I would add to my friends list, because for the most part I'm not all that interested in the arty subject matter which is such a major part of the journal. But at the same time the posts are generally interesting and the user seems nice.

Sense of Humour: 3/5.
There wasn't a lot of humour that I noticed. Except in the comments about spam. There were at least two entries that I read discussing spam and I found these both interesting and amusing.

Style: 3/5.
For the most part the writing style is fine. It's a well-written journal, although the words aren't a work of art. It's easy to read and flows well. It's a good journal and if you read it you won't find yourself banging your head against a wall because of the writing style. Well, except for maybe the drunken posts.

Openness: 4/5.
It's hard to answer this because I only read the public entries. I suspect that most of the emotion is tucked away and either private or friends-locked. However, there are entries about life and family that are public that many people would wish to hide away. On the whole, peganthyrus is open, although I feel I would have got to know her more if I had been able to read locked posts.

Quantity: 5/5.
While not posting every day, there are enough posts when she doesn't post to make up for it. She averages at least a post a day and the posts are a good length.

Live Journal Involvement: 4/5.
Paid account. 70 interests. 87 friends, watches 22 communties (three official) and one synfeed. A member of 19 communities. Has had the journal for two and a half years and in that time has written 1452 entries. Posted 8333 comments and received 11992.

Bonus: 3/5
Nothing more to add.

Total Score: 78 - Cool

Wow, I think that's one of the highest scores I've given in a long long time.
