EXTRACTS FROM A DRAFT OF THE PILOT SCRIPT: (7) After Jane and Hoyt's confrontation

Dec 29, 2010 20:17

This extract from the August 20, 2009 draft of the pilot script (here are Parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) covers the final scenes.  They play out pretty differently in lots of interesting respects, and there are several things that Jane/Maura shippers should find pleasing, including physical contact!

The first page has the end of Jane's abduction by Hoyt; how she gets away differs from the aired episode (instead of a flare, her gun is in her suitcase - she has it from returning from going to DC to find Dean), and Hoyt is the one that says "We match" after Jane shoots him.

But the best parts of what's different are ... oh wait, I'll let you read it yourself first :-).

Okay, first, there's an odd error of phrasing in the script direction on p. 57, "Jane and Maura EMBRACES her", like Janet Tamaro was trying to decide between "Jane and Maura EMBRACE" and "Maura EMBRACES her" (which would affect how the scene was framed for the cameras), but let's not split grammatical hairs - Maura races frantically to find Jane, with the urgency of "WHEELS SCREECHING," is the first to get to her, and they EMBRACE!

There's a bunch of exposition stuff on p. 58-59, but also the resolution of the Jane-Maura-Dean "triangle."  Hmm, script direction on p. 59 says "Something HITS [Jane's] heart hard" when she sees Maura and Dean together ...  I say Jane doesn't realize yet who she's actually jealous of, and needs someone to run up and whisper in her ear that the reason why she prefers the company of Maura to Dean is because she likes her.

As for Maura, yet again, when she's with Dean and sees Jane leaving, she goes after Jane (remember this happened in the unaired hospital scene as well), and again, they both ditch poor "confused" Agent Dean without so much as a goodbye. Just in general, Jane does the storming off, Maura does the chasing after her, and I think we saw continued echoes of Maura following Jane around in the aired episodes 2-4.

The few lines between Maura's "What are you doing?" and Jane's "Good, getting better at this girl stuff" on the last page seem like they could've been quite rich for subtext - confusion (and hurt) in Maura's eyes, Jane unable to hide her true feelings ... hence, lots of intense looks, despite Dean in the background.

And I'm sure Tamaro thought of getting massages as a nice girly thing for our BFFs to go off and do, but I can immediately attribute possible interest in Jane on Maura's part from that suggestion.  Jane, can you get a clue when Maura throws herself at you :-)?

I think in some ways, the episode we saw was more shippy, but overall, I prefer this version.  In the aired pilot, we had Maura come over to Jane's apartment with the baby tortoise, Jane suggesting that they go out drinking together, and there was no discussion of Dean, which was nice.  However, in this script, Maura ditches Dean for Jane, rather than Jane declining not to get together with Dean after she escapes Hoyt and the Apprentice because it's bad timing or whatever.  In fact, throughout this script, Jane is more clearly interested in dating Dean (as I noted in one of my comments in an earlier post, Dean asked Jane out when she went to find him in DC, and she said yes, got all girlified and was about to go out with him when Maura called to tell her about her apartment being trashed), while Maura consistently prioritizes being with Jane over being with Dean.  Maura knows what's what earlier than Jane, I think!

Anyway, this concludes all the most interesting scenes for Jane/Maura shippers; I'll post if I find any others or if there are any requests.  I'll probably make another post about scenes in the aired pilot that weren't in this script.

For now, can I just swoon again at "EMBRACES" and Jane and Maura driving off together?  (Hey, if they end the series with a kiss before they really drive off into the sunset - as opposed to off a cliff - I won't complain.  Doubt it'll happen even then though.)  In any case, Agent Dean, back away slowly and remember:

It's a chick thing.
