Another extract from the August 20, 2009 draft of the pilot script (here are Parts
1,
2,
3,
4, and
5). Doesn't offer the subtext overload of the last extract, but there are some interesting insights into both Jane and Maura and their relationship.
It's the morning right after the scene between Jane and Dean at her apartment, and Jane ends up finding out information about both Dean and the case from Maura. With a couple of exceptions which I'll go into, although the details of this played out a little differently on-air, I think the overall feel is the same: Maura has been keeping Jane out of the loop, and Jane is pissed off when she finds out.
So in the aired episode, we don't get Jane talking to her pretend-mom and then getting overheard by Maura. Script-Jane seems to blush a lot more easily than TV-Jane, and I'm glad they made that adjustment. We also learn that Jane didn't tell her mom about Hoyt and the Apprentice, which is consistent with why, prior to going over to Maura's, we didn't see Angela come to Jane's apartment as happened in the aired pilot.
Maura's "light foam" comment is in reference to an earlier instance when Maura brought Jane a coffee, and Jane told her it had too much foam as a joke, which Maura took completely seriously, of course, and then Jane had to explain that she was joking. (Hmm, maybe I'll upload that scene some time; come to think of it, Maura's always bringing Jane coffee, so clearly she uses it as an excuse to drop by :-).)
We also have Jane basically admitting she's afraid, something which in the aired episode took place as part of the bed scene, and Maura comforting her (just verbally in this draft of the script). And yes, Maura's "There'd be something wrong if you weren't terrified" pales in comparison to the final exchange of the aired scene.
A few things I especially liked:
(1) The script direction halfway down p. 49: "Jane LOOKS at Maura, SMILES." I know the caps are just info for what the camera should be focusing on, but still, this made me feel all warm and fuzzy. On a more analytical note, it's a nice example of a LOOK (but not chemistry per se) being scripted. I wonder if all those intense/adoring looks Maura gave Jane in 1.04 (and in other eps, obviously) were similarly scripted as "Maura LOOKS at Jane, SMILES"?
(2) Maura telling Jane that she became a cop because she wanted to be a superhero. I found this a fascinating tidbit as to how Maura sees Jane, and perhaps we're supposed to see Jane that way too. I mean, hello, season finale?! Also, capturing_words, if you're reading this, here's where Jane's use of "doctor" to address Maura ("Oh, but I am, doctor.") comes across as flirty in a similar way to when you noted that Maura addressed Jane as "Detective" in the TMJ conversation from the third extract.
(3) The script direction "Heavy silence DROPS between them like a drape." I like it for what it signifies for Jane/Maura conflict, but it's also a little bit funny to me the way that "RAW SEXUAL ENERGY gyrates" was - I mean, how do you film silence dropping, exactly??
(4) The direction that "Jane STARES at Maura as though she's reevaluating their entire relationship" before storming off. The one person she thought she could trust has - well, "betrayed" may be too strong a word, but seemingly proven herself unworthy of that trust. Obviously, the main textual conflict is supposed to be about Maura concealing knowledge about the case from Jane, but additional levels are Maura keeping anything of import from Jane, and being aligned with a third party who's been moving in on Jane's turf (in more ways than one). And once Jane's gone, "Maura looks miserable." Oh, the subtexty angst!

EDITED TO ADD THE FIRST SCENE OF MAURA BRINGING JANE COFFEE (which explains the light foam button comment):
This scene happens the morning after Jane stays with Maura.

INT. BOSTON P.D. PRECINCT - HOMICIDE - JANE’S AREA
Jane’s working with Frost, going through Hoyt’s MURDER BOOK.
JANE: Did Dean say anything -- why he was visiting Dr. Isles at 3 a.m.?
FROST: He was surprised to see us. Said he was dropping something off. Asked why you were there.
JANE: What’d you say, I’m a wuss?
FROST: Yeah. That’s exactly what I said.
Maura walks in with two big lattes, holds one out to Jane.
Jane opens the lid.
JANE: Too much foam.
She HANDS it back. Maura looks concerned. Jane CRACKS UP.
JANE (CONT'D): I’m kidding. Thank you.

Ha, I wonder what Frost did say. And Agent Dean, if you have half a brain, you'd figure out why Jane is willing to accept Maura's protectiveness and comfort, but not yours!
