“Long time no see” Sungmin greets him sweetly and Heechul groans. Couldn’t he have some peace even in the detention room?
“Seems like someone has gotten into trouble again” Heechul sneers, and mentally wonders why he meets his old friend on the times he least expect it.
“I see you haven’t changed as well”
“Would you two be quiet before you can even think about jumping on each other’s necks?” The assigned teacher says in a stern voice, already used to see the two boys in his room every once in a while.
Heechul sticks his tongue out to Sungmin, who only sends him a fake smile in return. Isn’t it just nice to do some catch up with your friend-enemy?
Heechul almost falls forward when someone bumps into him from behind. When he turns around, there’s a person whose face is hidden by many shopping bags.
“Watch where you’re going!” Heechul doesn’t care if he’s talking to an old person, his day hasn’t been one of the best so far…
The clumsy person struggles with the numerous boxes, “I’m sorry!” Oh, isn’t this voice familiar?
“Wait up Jungsu!” A voice calls from afar and Heechul’s guess is confirmed. Gosh, could his day get any worse? “Heechul ah?” Kangin says once he gets to Jungsu’s side and takes some of the bags.
“Long time no see, Kangin, Eeteuk” Heechul greets half-heartedly, feeling his usual headache coming. There’s the urge to tease about the excessive amount of shopping bags at the tip of his tongue, but he doesn’t feel like it.
“Can we go to the arcades??” A childish voice interjects.
“Sure Kyu-” Heechul replies but once he notices it’s a random boy dragging his mother along, his expression softens.
“See you guys~” He monotonously bids farewell, resuming his walk.
“It is just me, or Heechul is a bit different?” Eeteuk tilts his head to the side, honestly curious.
Kangin shrugs, balancing the bags and boxes in his arms, “Well, he has cut that girly long hair of his”
Eeteuk ignores the last comment, “Who is ‘Kyu’?”
“Must be his new boyfriend” Eeteuk jabs his elbow at Kangin’s side.
“Would you confess to Donghae already??” Heechul almost yells and his mother looks at him bewildered, ‘Are you really talking with Kibum?’
‘Forget it!’ He waves his hand at his mother while listening to Kibum say nothing at all, “I-No-It’s not-”
“All you talk about is Donghae! Ugh, you should see the love-struck face you make!!”
“It doesn’t change anything!” Kibum seems to realize what he had just said and stays silent for a while, “…And there is Jessica”
“Jessica?” Heechul arcs his eyebrow and scoffs, “I think you have to go see your ophthalmologist again. Get his card for Donghae too, he needs glasses as well.”
“Why do you still hate Sungmin?”
“Haven’t I told you already?” Heechul sighs, “We’ve always been like this, even before we got apart” He yawns and lies down on the sofa. Kyuhyun soon joins him. “Our quarrel isn’t a bad one”
“But it’s still awkward, right?”
“Maybe” Heechul replies, eyelids heavy from sleepiness. Kyuhyun struggles not to fall off the couch. They used to fit perfectly on the couch, Heechul recalls in his half-awake state and feels Kyuhyun hugging him as last alternative before he’s dead to the world. When he wakes up on his bed a few hours later, he notices it had been a dream.
He felt like going to the park for reasons he couldn’t explain. The sun wasn’t strong anymore at that time of the day, but it was warm enough for him to buy ice cream at the nearest ice cream parlor.
Savoring the remains of his treat, he spots Sungmin at the bench he usually sat. Before he could turn around and pretend he hadn’t seen him, Sungmin looks up and waves. Damn.
“Don’t remember you to be one to take a walk…” Sungmin comments.
Heechul rolls his eyes, “Am I not allowed to? And what about you, waiting for Siwon?”
“Not really.”
Good, now he can leave. “I-”
“Actually, I wanted to talk to you” Sungmin aborts any possible excuse Heechul might have had to get away from there.
“Aaalright” Heechul sits by Sungmin’s side, making a point to stare anywhere else but at the other’s vicinities. Time passes and the atmosphere between the two couldn’t get any thicker. That’s why he hated silent and almost too perfect types like Sungmin…
“I wanted to know why you hate me so much.”
Heechul takes a deep breath. There’s so much he would like to do and say in reply to that, but there’s no good in getting angry in the middle of a public park. “You know, maybe that idiot hasn’t told you this, but I will. More than not contacting any of us, you have no idea of how much you hurt Siwon because of this. He had loved you even back then!” Heechul feels like pulling his hair while telling all of this. Why does it seem like he only has idiotic blockheads for friends?
Sungmin looks at him in shock and Heechul continues, “You have no idea because you left us! You thought that coming back would make it all right again… Siwon may have forgiven you, but I haven’t!”
Sungmin’s shoulders are shaking, and he feels both completely satisfied and remorseful for being a bit crude to him.
“I’m really sorry. Sorry for leaving you guys… I... was afraid of what I felt for Siwon. I thought I could forget it if I lived far away... so I decided to leave without saying goodbye”
Upon finally listening to Sungmin’s true reasons, all the anger boiling up inside him slowly disappear.
“What can I do?” Heechul relaxes against the bench. “Siwon has chosen you, that can’t be helped… I hate to admit you two go well together” He sighs dramatically. Taking a handkerchief out of his pocket, he gives it to Sungmin.
Heechul looks at the sky above them and feels much better than he had felt for a while. He looks back at Sungmin, who is wiping his eyes, but isn’t crying anymore.
“Don’t think too much about it, it’s in the past now. Now work hard on making things work or else I’ll personally kill you, understood?”
Sungmin chuckles and nods, “I’ve missed you, Cinderella”
“…Yeah, me too, Pumpkin” Heechul smiles a little, messing with Sungmin’s too-perfect hair.
“It’s you fault you brat!” Heechul scolds, “I felt like dying!!”
“But isn’t it good to be friends with him again?”
“Friends? We’ve never been friends!!” Heechul replies, rolling his eyes at Kyuhyun’s laughter.
“And you know what hyung! There’s this new girl in my class. She’s from Korea too! And she’s-”
“Kyuhyun won’t stop talking about a girl he met at his school” Heechul wants to strangle the nearest person just at the thought of her, or the endless hours the younger took talking about her.
“Maybe he’s in love with her?” Siwon hums, strangely happy.
“She isn’t Kyuhyun’s type at all!”
“How do you know it? You’ve never met the girl, correct? You sound just like a mother hen”
“Do not!” Heechul fumes, crossing his arms. Maybe Sungmin had been scratched out of his enemies list, but another one came to replace him. Isn’t it just great? “And what’s with this annoying smile anyway?” Heechul frowns at Siwon’s wide and silly smile.
On cue, Siwon blushes and scratches his nape, “Oh, uhm, so, hehe” Heechul feels very inclined to strangle him, for real this time. “Sungmin uhm, kissed me” He adds the second part in a secretive voice, his face going from light pink to tomato red, and Heechul throws up a bit in his own mouth.
He quickly recovers his posture though, “Huh, I’ve already-”
“You what?” Siwon asks, eyebrows shooting up.
“Never mind” Heechul is glad he didn’t say it aloud. His first kiss had been Kyuhyun after all...
