I just got done with a lovely, unexpected dinner with Mom and Dad. We had tamales and refried beans, and topics of conversation ranged from my wedding plans, to gift plans for my brother's birthday, to Komodo dragons and parthenogenesis, to James Tiptree Jr. stories, to biblical scholarship, with a big chunk about sex workers and the ramifications of titillation as product (and head-injured wards with high libidos) somewhere in the middle there. And Mom and I talked about Jane Austen movies (by which I mean movies made after Jane Austen novels. Jane Austen has not had, so far as I am aware, much of a film career) for a good long while when Dad went to walk the dog, too.
I couldn't have planned a more interesting conversation if I'd tried. I'm so lucky to have parents who read anything and everything, and are interested in anything and everything, and who passed it on to me.
Also, the tamales were quite good.
