IC
Name: Kanda, Yuu
Fandom: D.Gray-Man
History link: Wikia
Age: Biologically/currently 18-19ish. He's been 'alive' for 9 years, actually, but has also had a previous life of who knows how many years.
Canon point: After he's knocked out (killed?) and dragged to North American by Wisely, but before he wakes up (..comes back to life?).

Personality: Kanda is at first portrayed as a very cold young man with a strict personality at first. He's rude to his comrades and just about everyone else (except the females, and even then it's rare of him to be overtly polite). There is no real underlying reason for why this is, but he claims fairly often that he hates anyone who is useless (as well as anyone who is cursed, stupid, or annoying-- which is.. just about everyone, in his opinion). He does, however contradict himself at times-- he once claimed he wouldn't help Allen even if the younger were about to be killed, and yet Kanda still stepped in to save him, claiming further that he hated those who didn't keep their promises even more. So, either way, Kanda can always find something to dislike about someone (or at least, find excuses for his actions).

In the past, we're shown that he wasn't as cold and ill-tempered. As a 'child', his only friend that was his age was Alma Karma, and even then Kanda wasn't exactly what you'd call a 'good friend'. He and Alma fought and argued and threw insults, but they ultimately were 'friends', able to understand each other's pain of going through numerous testing to force them to be compatible with Innocence.

During the flashback, Kanda also states that in the "Sixth Asia Research Facility", things like Akuma, the Earl, Exorcists, and Innocence-- everything had been prepared for explaination and it was all predetermined. Since he had no memories of his previous life, he was forced to believe what they told him. This, added to the truth that he eventually learned about the Synthetic Disciple Project (and learning that they had lied to him all along by keeping the fact that he was actually dead a secret), gave him a rather cynical view on the Order.

In spite of this, Kanda appears to remain "loyal" to the church (though, really, it's possible that he doesn't even care about the church). He will carry out whatever mission he is given to the letter, and also has no qualms with dragging anyone compatible with Innocence back to Headquarters, even if they're children. Sacrifices have to be made to win any war. And Kanda does not approve of those who enter war thinking that they can achieve victory without sacrifices, especially since he himself is technically one of those 'sacrifices'. Even 9 years ago, he was disgusted by Alma, not because the other boy was being friendly, but because he was being friendly at a place like the research institute where they were forced to painfully synchronize with Innocence.

Still, Kanda does seem to have some sympathy. When he found out that Daisya (a fellow Exorcists and quite possibly a good friend) had been killed by a Noah, Kanda didn't break down into tears like their mentor did, but he did have a visible change in his expression. And when he overheard people whispering about Tapp after he'd been turned into a Skull (a creature with a skull for a head that serves the Earl), about whether or not Tapp was even 'human'. Whether he relates this to himself or if he's sympathetic about it is unknown. Perhaps, with the revelation that Kanda is in fact a synthetic disciple, he could possibly have been sympathetic towards Tapp's state.

Powers/Abilities: Kanda's main weapon is his Innocence which in the form of a katana that has been named Mugen. It can release various attacks, as well as use his life-force for stronger attacks.

1. Kaichuu: Ichigen releases a swarm of supernatural underworld insects/creatures to devour the opponent.
2. Nigentou coats his sword with a shining blue/green energy, and that energy can be used to either make another sword on its own, or to coat the scabbard and turn that into a second sword.
2.5 Hakka Tourou requires Nigentou to be activated. Kanda slashes the enemy eight times in quick succession that collectively resemble a flower.
3. Shouka: Sangenshiki must be activate at the same time to activate two other attacks. Shouka activates the power of Kanda's tattoo and changes his pupil to three dots (not three commas like Sharingan, just dots), while Sangenshiki increases his speed and strength while decreasing his healing time.
3.3 Consume is a move that allowed Kanda to temporarily reconstruct Mugen after it was shattered by the Noah Skinn Boric. It falls apart again shortly afterward.
3.6 Bakuhakuzan makes a slash that seems to create explosions, and is able to effectively damage a Level 4 Akuma.
4. Fourth Illusion changes the previously three dots to four (surprise surprise), giving Kanda another increase in speed and power.
5. Fifth Illusion changes the glow of Mugen's blade and causes it to emit a sort of electricity. Not much else is known, as it only appeared for all of 5 panels, other than it seems to give Kanda a need for destruction. It is also able to be blocked by Allen's Sword of Exorcism.

He won't have his sword with him in Vegas, but he will most definitely be trying to get buy it back from Loki.

Even without all these abilities, Kanda is still absurdly strong (and even as a kid he was still just as strong) and is capable of slicing a steel/iron/metal chandelier into pieces moments before it falls on top of someone with a normal sword. Kanda also has regenerative abilities; it's been stated that his healing has been slowing down (taking three days to heal from a deep gash in his chest), though this seems to be contradicted as the recent chapters have him regrowing a severed arm in mere seconds (as well as having maybe a third of his total body mass melted away, only to regenerate in a page or so). This may also be the cause of his insanely high pain tolerance, seeing as he can take two sharp rods to the chest and still be alive/conscious while yanking them out, and then immediately going back into battle mode.

It is believed that the lotus in his room is connected to his life-force by the tattoo/curse mark on his chest, and that his life will end once the lotus wilts (or vice versa-- the lotus will die when he dies). It's not really made clear, and it's unknown . However, we do know that, taking Alma as an example, if Kanda regenerates too much, the regeneration charm in his chest will stop working and he will, eventually, die.

His blood also seems to be able to heal otherwise fatal injuries, though he found this out accidentally and would probably never share this bit of info voluntarily.

Prose sample:

It's another solo mission. Kanda listens silently but attentively to the briefing in Komui's office, skimming over the document in his hands with a distracted gaze. It's the same as always. Sit down, read, listen, leave. A trip to Spain, this time. Look around. Innocence? Find it, bring it back. Safe and sound. Back in one piece. It's the norm. Routine.

Just a day in the life of an Exorcist.

Kanda leaves the tower and boards the train accompanied by a Spanish-native Finder. His English isn't the best, so Kanda refrains from speaking to him-both to spare the man of embarrassment and to spare his own ears of the butchered language. He allows the Finder to translate when they reach the border between France and Spain and have to switch train, but says nothing aside from that. There's nothing to say, and he won't waste his breath with senseless chatter, distracting both of them when danger could hit at any second.

It's only when he's alone in the first class private car that Kanda finally sets his suitcase down and reclines back against the cushioned seat. It's only then that he allows himself the luxury of relaxing, no matter how much he's said otherwise about always being on guard, no matter how much he should be on guard, he relaxes. He closes his eyes. And with those damned lotuses out of sight, out of mind, he can focus better on other, more important things. The mission briefing. Little details. How long it'll take to reach Cartagena.

(When he asks the Finder, he's given a rambling explanation of how there's four stops until Madrid, that they'll have to change trains at least once on the way there. When Kanda finds it necessary to remind the man that they're going to Cartagena and not Madrid, the Finder continues on about needing to pass through Madrid and Albacete and Chinchilla and a handful of other cities whose name Kanda can't recall before they can get to Cartagena. Kanda deduces that it'll take a while and merely snaps at the Finder to wake him up when they have to change cars, then proceeds to slam the door shut in his face.)

Multiple stops, trains breaking down, Akuma attacks, hotel stays, rainy days, and many other setbacks later, there's just one last train ride. Kanda's done his best to keep that damn Finder alive, both out of a sense of duty as well as the fact that he's the only one who knows enough Spanish to make the travel easier. And despite all irritability, he refrains from trying either of their patience any more than they've been already. The trip may be nearly over, but that's not the end of it. There's still questioning to do, directions to follow, people to interrogate, more Akuma to kill. Innocence to find. A mission to complete.

It's not over until the fat lady sings. Or, in this case, until Kanda has brought the Innocence back to HQ in one piece. He debates letting the Finder die at the list moment so he won't have to listen to the man's chattering, but..

..But in the end, they both make it back to HQ, slightly battered, tired, but relieved and successful in finding the piece of Innocence, and-- most importantly of all --

--Alive.
