This post features all of Sephiroth's official dialogue from Final Fantasy VII (
original game), FFVII:
Advent Children, and FFVII:
Crisis Core. I decided to collect it all in a reference post to look back and study capturing his 'voice'.
I also posted unofficial FFVII:
Before Crisis script translation dialogue (credit to
Gunshot Romance and
FF Compilation).
I've now added the official FFVII:
Advent Children Complete dialogue; most of the lines are completely unchanged. One quote has very minor grammatical revisions, and there's only one additional line.
Notes: It's important to note the differences in each source material. The original game was released first (1997). The translations are somewhat stiff, there were quite a few typos, and the official N.A release date was pushed back six months.
FFVII: AC was released in 2005; FFVII: CC was released in 2008. The latter sources have smoother translations and better localization. There are a couple lines in the FFVII: CC dialogue that are noted with unofficial Japanese translation because they more closely resemble official Japanese dialogue and offer a slightly different attitude depending on interpretation.
FFVII: BC was released in 2004 as a phone game available only in Japanese; as mentioned earlier, the translations are NOT official.
FFVII: ACC was released in 2009. Some dialogue revisions contained grammatical errors and/or included symbolic references.
Final Fantasy VII
- Cloud's Recollection of the Nibelheim Incident (Kalm)"Hey."
"Settle down."
"...just like a kid."
"...this isn't a typical mission."
"Why do you say that?"
"...I thought you wanted a briefing?"
"Our mission is to investigate an old Mako reactor.
There have been reports of it malfunctioning, and producing brutal creatures.
First, we will dispose of those creatures. Then, we'll locate the problem and neutralize it."
"The Mako Reactor at Nibelheim."
"Hmm... hometown..."
"That would be our monster..."
"How does it feel?"
"It's your first time back to your hometown in a long time, right?
So how does it feel?
I wouldn't know because I don't have a hometown..."
"My mother is Jenova. She died right after she gave birth to me. My father..."
"What does it matter...?
All right, let's go."
"The Mako smell is pretty bad here."
"We leave for the reactor at dawn. Make sure you get to sleep early."
"All that we need is one lookout, so you others, get some rest."
"Oh, that's right...
You may visit your family and friends."
"...This scenery.......I feel like I know this place.
...........
We have an early start tomorrow. You should get some sleep soon."
"...I'm not going to wake you up tomorrow."
"I've hired a guide to the Mako reactor.
I've heard she's young. I hope we can rely on her..."
"Once the guide gets here, we're heading out."
"...Trust me."
"Then there's no problem if you respect her.
....Let's go."
"Everyone seems to be all right. Can we get back to where we were?"
"It may sound cold, but we've got no time to search for him. We can't go back now, so we must go on. We'll travel together from here."
"It must be the Mako energy. This mountain is especially abundant in it. That's why the Mako Reactor was built here."
"A Mako fountain. It's a miracle of nature."
"Materia. When you condense Mako energy, materia is produced.
It's very rare to be able to see materia in its natural state."
"You were in SOLDIER and didn't even know that?
...the knowledge and wisdom of the Ancients is held in the materia.
Anyone with this knowledge can freely use the powers of the Land and the Planet. That knowledge interacts between ourselves and the planet, calling up magic..... or so they say."
"Ha, ha, ha!"
"A man once told me never to use an unscientific term such as mysterious power! It shouldn't even be called magic!
I still remember how angry he was."
"Hojo of ShinRa, Inc. ... An inexperienced man assigned to take over the work of a great scientist.
He was a walking mass of complexes."
"Only authorized people are allowed in. This place is full of ShinRa's industrial secrets."
"Take care of the lady."
"This is the reason for the malfunction. This part is broken.
Cloud, close the valve."
"Why did it break...?"
"...now I see, Hojo.
But, even doing this, will never put you on the same level as Professor Gast."
"This is a system that condenses and freezes the Mako energy...that is, when it's working correctly.
Now, what does Mako energy become when it's further condensed?"
"Right, normally. But Hojo put something else in there. ...Take a look.
Look through the window."
"Normal members of SOLDIER are humans that have been showered with Mako.
You're different from the others, but still human.
But what are they? They've been exposed to a high degree of Mako, far more than you."
"Exactly. And it's Hojo of ShinRa that produced these monsters.
Mutated living organisms produced by Mako energy. That's what these monsters really are."
"N... no...."
"...Was I?"
"...Was I created this way, too?"
"Am I the same as all these monsters....."
"You saw it! All of them.... were humans...."
"....I've always felt since I was small...
That I was different from the others. Special, in some way.
But... not like this...."
"....an organism that was apparently dead, was found in a 2000 year old geological stratum.
Professor Gast named that organism Jenova..."
"X Year, X Month, X Day. Jenova confirmed to be an Ancient...
X Year, X Month, X Day. Jenova Project approved. The use of Mako Reactor 1 approved for use..."
"My mother's name is Jenova... Jenova Project... Is this just a coincidence?"
"Professor Gast... Why didn't you tell me anything? ...Why did you die?"
"Ha, ha, ha..."
"Who is it!?"
"Hmph... traitor."
"You ignorant traitor. I'll tell you."
"This Planet originally belonged to the Cetra. Cetra was a itinerant race. They would migrate in, settle the Planet, then move on...
At the end of their harsh, hard journey, they would find the Promised Land and supreme happiness."
"But, those that disliked the journey appeared. Those who stopped their migrations built shelters and elected to lead an easier life.
They took that which the Cetra and the planet made without giving one whit in return!"
"Those are your ancestors."
"Long ago, disaster struck this planet."
"Your ancestors escaped... They survived because they hid.
The Planet was saved by sacrificing the Cetra. After that, your ancestors continued to increase."
"Now all that's left of the Cetra is in these reports."
"Don't you get it?"
"An Ancient named Jenova was found in the geological stratum of 2000 years ago.
The Jenova Project."
"The Jenova Project wanted to produce people with the powers of the Ancients..... no, the Cetra."
"...I am the one that was produced."
"Yes.
Professor Gast, leader of the Jenova Project and genius scientists, produced me."
"Out of my way. I'm going to see my mother."
"Mother, I'm here to see you. Please, open this door."
"Mother, let's take this planet back together.
I've thought of a great idea. Let's go to the Promised Land."
"Ha, ha, ha..... They've come again, mother."
"With her superior power, knowledge, and magic, Mother was destined to become the ruler of this Planet."
"But they...
Those worthless creatures
are stealing the planet from Mother.
But now I'm here with you
so don't worry."
"Ha, ha, ha... my sadness? What do I have to be sad about?
I am the chosen one. I have been chosen to be the leader of this Planet.
I have orders to take this planet back from you stupid people for the Cetra. What am I supposed to be sad about?"
- Cloud Encounters 'Sephiroth' in the ShinRa Mansion (Nibelheim)"Being here brings back memories.
Are you going to participate in the reunion?"
"Jenova will be at the Reunion. Jenova will rejoin the Reunion becoming a calamity from the skies."
"...I see. I don't think you have the right to participate.
I will go north past Mt. Nibel. If you with to find out... then follow..."
- Tseng Encounters 'Sephiroth' (Temple of the Ancients)"So you opened the door. Well done."
"A lost treasure house of knowledge. The wisdom of the Ancients..."
"I am becoming one with the Planet."
"You stupid fools. You have never even thought about it.
All the spirit energy of this Planet. All its wisdom... knowledge...
I will meld with it all. I will become one with it... It will become one with me."
"The way....... lies here."
"Only death awaits you all. But do not fear."
"For it is through death that a new spirit energy is born. Soon, you will live again as a part of me."
- 'Sephiroth' Reveals His Plans (Temple of the Ancients)"So cold.
I am always by your side.
Come."
"Splendid."
"A treasure house of knowledge..."
"Look well."
"At that which adds to the knowledge of..."
"I am becoming one with the Planet."
"Mother..... it's almost time....
Soon..... we will become one."
"It's simple.
Once the Planet is hurt, it gathers Spirit Energy to heal the injury."
"The amount of energy gathered depends on the size of the injury."
"...What would happen if there was an injury that threatened the very life of the Planet?
Think how much energy would be gathered!"
"Ha ha ha. And at the center of that injury, will be me.
All that boundless energy will be mine."
"By merging with all the energy of the Planet, I will become a new life form, a new existence.
Melding with the Planet... I will cease to exist as I am now.
Only to be reborn as a 'God' to rule over every soul."
"Behold that mural. The Ultimate Destructive Magic... Meteor."
"Wake up!!" (Telepathic, via Jenova.)
"Ha ha ha... It is not me."
(Cloud: He shouldn't be able to find the Promised Land.) "...Ah, but I have."
"I'm far superior to the Ancients.
I became a traveler of the Lifestream and gained the knowledge and wisdom of the Ancients.
And soon, I will create the future."
"Ha, ha, ha... I wonder?"
"Wake up!" (Telepathic, via Jenova.)
"There, Cloud... good boy."
".......Well done."
"Hmm........ She's thinking of interfering? She will be a difficult one, don't you think?"
"We must stop that girl soon."
- 'Sephiroth' Kills Aerith (Forgotten City)"Do not worry. Soon the girl will become part of the Planet's energy.
All that is left is to go North. The 'Promised Land' waits for me over the snowy fields.
There I will become a new being by uniting with the planet. As will this girl..."
"What are you saying? Are you trying to tell me you have feelings too?"
"Ha, ha, ha...... Stop acting as if you were sad.
There's no need to act as though you're angry either."
"Because, Cloud, You are..."
"Because, you are...... a puppet." (Telepathic, via Jenova.)
- 'Sephiroth' Reveals the 'True' Nibelheim Incident (North Cave/Northern Crater)"All right, let's go." (Memory.)
"I see you finally understand."
"Oh, is that so?
You are just a puppet... you have no heart... and cannot feel any pain...
How can there be any meaning in the memory of such a being?
What I have shown you is reality. What you remember, that is the illusion."
"...Do you understand?"
"Ha, ha, ha......
I want to take you back to your real self.
The one who gave me the Black Materia that day...
Who would have ever thought a failed experiment would prove so useful?
Hojo would die if he knew."
"Five years ago you were...
...constructed by Hojo, piece by piece, right after Nibelheim was burnt.
A puppet made up of vibrant Jenova cells, her knowledge, and the power of Mako.
An incomplete Sephiroth-clone. Not even given a number. ...That is your reality."
"Ha, ha, ha... Tifa...
Why are you so worried and scared by those words?
Hmm... Shall I show everyone here what's in your heart?"
"Ha, ha, ha... You look like you're not feeling well."
"Cloud... Don't blame Tifa.
The ability to change one's looks, voice, and words, is the power of Jenova.
Inside of you, Jenova has merged with Tifa's memories, creating you.
Out of Tifa's memory...
A boy named Cloud might've just been a part of them."
"Ha, ha, ha...... Think, Cloud!
...Cloud? Ha, ha, ha...... Oh, excuse me. You never had a name."
"You still don't understand? Then..."
"Do you remember the picture that we took before we headed for Mt. Nibel?"
"...Tifa, you remember, right?"
"But there is no way he would know."
"Now... what happened to that picture?"
".......is this it?"
"...Do you want to see it? It turned out pretty good."
- The Nibelheim Incident (Cloud's Subconscious, The Lifestream)"So how does it feel?"
"It's your first time back to your hometown in a long time, right?
So how does it feel?
I wouldn't know because I don't have a hometown..."
"My mother is Jenova. She died right after she gave birth to me. My father..."
"What does it matter..."
All right, let's go."
(Fast forward. Sephiroth finished razing Nibelheim and was taking Jenova.)
"Aaarrrgh...... who... who are you?"
(Rewind. Flashbacks of Sephiroth's arrival, this time revealing Cloud as a regular.)
"How does it feel?
It's your first time back to your hometown in a long time, right?"
(Fast forward. Sephiroth exits with Jenova's head.)
"Just like you."
(Sephiroth stabs Cloud and lifts him off the ground.)
"Don't... push... your luck..."
(Cloud steadies himself back to the ground and lifts Sephiroth instead.)
"It can't be!"
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children"Good to see you, Cloud."
"Your Geostigma is gone? That's too bad."
"The last thoughts of Geostigma are dead. Those remnants will join the Lifestream and girdle the planet -- choking it, corroding it. What I want, Cloud, is to sail the darkness of the cosmos with this Planet as my vessel -- just as my mother did before long ago."
"Then one day we'll find a new planet and on its soil we'll create a shining future."
"Well, that's up to you, Cloud."
"Where did you find this strength?"
"I thought of a wonderful present for you."
"Shall I give you despair?"
"On your knees. I want you to beg for forgiveness."
"Tell me what you cherish most. Give me the pleasure of taking it away."
"Heh."
"I will... never be a memory."

Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core
- Training Simulation (Chapter One)"Showing your back to the enemy... Overconfidence will destroy you."
"It's over."
- Wutai (Chapter Two)(While examining a dead body.) "Genesis..."
"A Genesis copy..."
"Where's Angeal?"
"Humph, so he's gone, too."
"It means that Angeal has betrayed us as well."
- Midgar (Chapter Four)"It's been a while, Zack."
"Come to Lazard's room."
"My apologies."
"They believe your emotions will hamper your judgment."
"That's why I'm going, too."
"An intruder!"
"Close."
"This must be Hollander's doing."
"A ShinRa scientist who vanished after lifting the copy technology."
"Perhaps."
"Hollander lost his bid for the leadership of the Science Department. He has borne a grudge against ShinRa ever since. Revenge is most likely his objective."
"I would prefer not to believe it, but..."
"Very well, I won't. Now, Zack. Genesis copies have been sighted in Sector 8 as well. Let's go."
"We should split up."
"Once Sector 8 is clear, come to Mako Reactor 5."
"Angeal has been sighted."
"The army is mobilizing, but there's still time. You and I will find them before they do, and...
...fail to eliminate them."
"Yes, for real."
"It appears Genesis isn't the only one who can be copied. The company training room..."
"We used to sneak in there for fun, when the 2nds were out... Genesis, Angeal, and I."
"Hmph. I wonder."
- Flashback"'LOVELESS' Act I."
"How can I not remember when you've beaten it into my head?"
"Ha! Is that the best you can do?" (Japanese: Now, how about putting away that toy sword.)
"Humph, come and try."
"Angeal..."
"Yes, as far as Genesis was concerned. But, as for Angeal..."
"Later, I received one of his famous lectures."
"Always the same. Discipline, dreams, honor, et cetera..."
"So it's true... they're in a league with Hollander."
"A wretched sight..."
"It was Hollander's experiment. The result was a normal child. Which meant he failed. However..."
(Read: Report on SOLDIER Degradation Phenomenon.)
"Why couldn't I be the donor? A SOLDIER Type G..."
(Read: The Ancients Project - Outline)
"Project G gave birth to the man we know as Genesis."
"'Project Genesis.' Contrary to this report, Genesis showed clear signs of change."
"Not only that."
"Abominations."
"Hollander... I thought I'd find you here."
"Genesis."
"Zack! Go after Hollander!"
"'LOVELESS' again? You never change."
(Genesis: Three friends go into battle. One is captured, one flies away, the one that is left becomes a hero.) "A common story."
(Genesis: If we were to enact it, would I be the one to play the hero, or would you?) "It's all yours."
(Genesis: Indeed. After all, your glory should have been mine.) "How petty."
- Midgar (Chapter Five)"You're late."
"Humph."
"Forget about Hojo."
- Junon (Chapter Seven)"Mission failed. This goes on your permanent record."
"Let the Turks take care of the rest. I was on my way to Modeoheim, but I heard you were in the area."
"The situation has not resolved. Genesis copies have been sighted around the world."
"Did Genesis really die?"
"They've been sighted in Midgar as well."
"Permission to return...granted."
"Take care."
"The device Hollander was using has been stolen."
"Probably. We'll meet again soon."
- Midgar (Chapter Eight)"There are new developments."
"Headquarters. Now."
"Legions of monsters have spawned near a regional mako reactor. The workers have all gone missing. Local SOLDIER operatives have also vanished. The company is dispatching additional operatives to investigate the matter. You and I, that is."
"What's wrong?"
"The missing operatives were the ones tracking Lazard. Also, they have reported a strange podlike device in the area."
"Probably the same device that was stolen in Modeoheim."
"Lazard, Hollander..."
"We'll have to go see them."
"First, go to the SOLDIER floor. We'll depart as soon as you and the rest of the men are ready to go."
"Our orders are to investigate the reactor. They mention nothing of...old friends. Depending on what happens, I may abandon ShinRa. Until then, I'll remain loyal to SOLDIER."
"To Nibelheim."
- Nibelheim (Chapter Nine)"So, how does it feel? To be home after all this time? I have no hometown. I wouldn't know."
"My mother's name is Jenova. She died shortly after I was born. My father... [laughs] Why am I talking about this? Come on. Let's go."
"We depart for the reactor at dawn. Make sure to get plenty of sleep. Only one of you needs to keep watch. Make sure you get some rest as well. Ah, that's right... You have permission to go visit family and friends, if you wish."
"The landscape... I could swear I've seen it before."
"She'll be fine, if you protect her."
"This is a top-secret facility. Non-ShinRa personnel are not permitted inside."
"Keep the young lady safe."
"This is the cause of the malfunction. This section is broken. Zack, go seal the valve. Why did it break?"
"You average SOLDIER members are mako-infused humans. You're enhanced, but still human. But then, what are those things? Their mako energy levels are exponentially higher than yours."
"Yes. The ShinRa scientist Hojo was the one who created them. Abominations spawned by mako energy...That's what monsters are."
"Could it be...that I...? ...was created the same way? Am I the same as these monsters?"
"I knew, ever since I was a child... I was not like the others. I knew mine was a special existence. But this...This was not what I meant. Am I...a human being?"
"What is the Jenova Project?"
"My mother's...cells?"
"What do you want of me?"
"Whether your words are lies created to deceive me... or the truth that I have sought all my life... it makes no difference."
"You will rot." (Japanese: Go ahead and rot.)
"A life form in a state of suspended animation, excavated from a 2,000 year-old stratum. Professor Gast named this life form Jenova...
Date: X/X/XX - Jenova verified as an Ancient...
Date X/X/XX - Jenova Project Approved. Mako Reactor 1 authorized for use...
My mother's name, Jenova... The Jenova Project... Could this be a coincidence...? Professor Gast... Why didn't you tell me? Why did you die...?"
"I'm coming to get you..."
"Mother, let's take back the planet together. I...I had an epiphany. Let's go to the promised land... Mother..."
"Mother, they're here again. You should have ruled this planet. You were stronger, smarter. But they they came... Those inferior dullards... They came and took this planet away from you. But don't be sad, Mother. I am with you now..."
"We meet at last, Mother..."
"I am the chosen one. I have been chosen to rule this planet."
"How dare you...!"
"Don't test me."
"No...! Impossible!"
Final Fantasy VII: Before Crisis
- Chapter 3.4 (Junon)"Impressive. You blocked my attack.
"What's your name?"
......
"You over there."
"I sense an exceptional energy coming from her. Tell your superiors not to take her lightly."
"...... Fighting for a reason....."
- Chapter 10.4 (Midgar)......
......
The Turks. I'll leave the rest to you. I've done my duty.
......
- Chapter 12.3 (Nibelheim)"Hey, Zack. Finish this. We need to plan for tomorrow."
- Chapter 12.4 (Mt. Nibel Reactor)"Traitor."
"I'm only getting started. Mother was supposed to rule this world. But you stole it from her."
"I am the chosen one."
"I am the one chosen to rule this world. I will take the Planet back from you."
"And I will be the one who rids the Planet of you -- the usurpers."
"It's only a matter of time before I destroy you all. If you value it, leave with what remains of your pitiful life while you can!"
"Hm?"
"This... can't be! You... couldn't have..."
"Those eyes... Humph. I won't let anybody get in my way."
"Mother... Let's take this Planet back together."
"I will gain the knowledge of the Lifestream, and gain new power..." (Unspoken thought.)
