Neighbours

I have come to the conclusion that I would like to know my neighbours in a very distant way. I think that knowing their names and the general vibe is more than sufficient. The general feeling that they are not likely to be serial killers and that if my house was on fire I could run next door to use their phone. But that is the extent of what I want to know about them. Currently I know too much about one of my neighbours. So that I feel forced to chat when I see them. The other side I have just the right level of relationship in terms of not really having to chat but on the downside, a wave as we see each other usually leads to a 'could you check you smoke alarm that is beeping, can we chop down some branches' and I constantly feel like we are in trouble.
These issues wouldn't be as bad if I only saw the neighbours in the process of coming and going but our houses and yards are such that nowhere is safe. I can see one lot of my neighbours lounge rooms from my lounge room window so I tend to keep the curtain drawn despite the gloomy feel so I can feel like We both get a bit of privacy. We can also see completely into each other's yards thanks to half a metre high wire fence. And today I got caught by the other neighbour as I was heading out to the back yard since their backyard is higher than ours.
Backyards should be a sacred zone. Your space to avoid contact people while still enjoying the outside world. I should be able to sun my nether regions if my heart desires to do so without having to wave or worry about offending people. I don't want to chat when I am hanging clothes on the line. If I wanted to chat I would come to the front door. And if you want to ask me about cutting down branches come to the front door so I can have the option of pretending I am not home.
