Election Day has come and gone... I have a very love/hate relationship with primaries-- why bust your ass if only 10-15% of registered voters are going to come out in the first place? I had agreed to work as a volunteer coordinator for someone running for IPS School Board, which, here in Marion County, might as well be a county office. There is seriously THAT much pomp and circumstance involved.
My candidate alone had nearly 130 volunteers, stationed at nearly every polling place. Her opponent had a smattering of supporters here and there, and in one location, the supporters took it upon themselves to intimidate our high school volunteers. He's a sleaze, so the fact that his supporters are underhanded should be no surprise. She won decisively, which was a relief.
I was in charge of wrangling volunteers and generally keeping the chaos to a minimum, which I think I did pretty well. I had my cell phone glued to my head from about 4:45 am to 7:45 pm, so I'm sure my brain tumor will be nice and big down the road. ;) I made the rounds to about 20 of the 60 total polling places in her district, and all seemed to be running smoothly (aside from the one place that didn't open until 8:00 am due to the ballots being STOLEN in the inspector's car!)
Anyway, that's that. I feel sort of guilty about not working the polls as part of the Dem establishment, but there are several reasons (none of them fair, but all of them valid) that I can't really ingratiate myself into the party infrastructure like I would like. Until then, I'm content with working around the edges and helping worthwhile candidates, even if it is for something as trivial as a school board election. I'm happy with the job that I did, and I'm so glad she won. :)
Now, if I can just catch up on some sleep...
