Magic the Gathering Deck Box

Nov 07, 2010 13:11

For my friend Joe's birthday last week, another friend (Nick) and I decided to make him a deck box. Since our house rules dictate we all have to play with 3 colors, our decks are about 90 cards and won't fit in the standard deck boxes.

Nick built the box out of 3/4" hickory and I woodburned and painted the top. Then we felted the inside (not all that well :o)). We learned a lot about felting. Hopefully it will look at lot nicer on the next boxes we make.

It has room for two 90+ card decks, and a center section for dice and counters.

Here's the initial layout of the lid:

And the final product (the paint was acrylic, and then it was sanded a little after it dried):

The inside. That's the dice bag I got Joe for being my best man at the wedding:

The style of painting on the lid was kind of an accident. I had planned to just do a light color wash on that area, but the blue was too thick. I let it dry and was sanding it off to reapply it when Nick looked over my shoulder. He fell in love with the look, so I copied it to the other colors.

We gave the box to Joe at his birthday party last weekend. He was pretty amazed. He didn't cry though, so we'll have to come up with something even more epic for next year.
