It seemed to Alice that there was always someone hanging around the large waterfall, either swimming or dangling their feet in the water or simply loitering nearby. It was unsanitary, not to mention annoying when all she wanted was some peace and quiet.
To that end, she'd gotten up early that morning to go swimming. Of course, if she was really that desperate to do so without anyone around, she could have found an empty stretch of beach, but she didn't feel like walking that far or getting sandy and salty and needing to wash off again anyway.
Fortunately, this early, there didn't seem to be anyone there yet. The sun was barely peeking through the tops of the trees, and the soothing sound of rushing water was unspoiled by human noise. It was...peaceful.
Alice had never thought she'd crave solitude. Once upon a time, after the end of the world, it had been the other way around.
She stripped down to her underwear, lacking modesty or a bikini, and slipped into the water. It was still cool, but not unpleasant; she floated by the side of the pool for a while, simply allowing herself to relax. For once.
Then she heard footsteps. Sighing, she opened her eyes and frowned to herself. Well, whoever it was, she was determined to ignore them. This was her morning, not anyone else's.
That didn't stop her from looking up to see who it was, though. Just in case.
