Last night I got about three hours of sleep.
Then! I spent the entire day being productive. It was actually kind of remarkable. Possibly the best part of my day was when my Hebrew class was basically a giant shit-show that could not collectively stop laughing for almost the entirety of the hour and twenty minutes that we met for.
After Hebrew I spent a bit of time cuddled up in bed and attempted to relax in place of actually sleeping. Then there was lunch and European Jewish Literature, during which Justin (ye olde Adviser) and I had a T.S. Eliot-off, which actually ended with another student crying out in dismay, "You guys are disgusting." I was pleased. Maybe that was the best part of my day.
I spent about three hours scanning teaching materials for my Dybbuk lecture next Tuesday, and I even scanned one the WRONG FUCKING WAY, and had to start all over again, but that didn't stop me! Oh no! I soldiered onward. After Document Scanning of Doom, I had a bit of rather nasty Fexican (fake Mexican) for dinner and headed over to the library where I proceeded to read scholarly essays about Babel's The Red Cavalry Cycle which I quoted an excerpt from in this journal a while back. Babel is kind of a literary genius. He writes like Nabakov, if Nabakov had written about war and Jews and not fourteen year-old tramps.
Another occurrence of note:
Today a first year in my EJL class asked what a thesis statement was. In so many words, she basically told us that she didn't understand what a thesis was or how in functioned within, and shaped the content of, an essay. It was a seemingly inane question. There was much eye-rolling and whispering and general "WTF-ing" around the room. Our professor attempted to explain, we tried not to giggle, he asked the class to help in an effort to shut us up. I would never, ever, ask a question like that. I would never have the guts appear that vulnerable in front of my peers. I attend a women's college and my classmates, though I adore them, are some of the most judgmental, hypercritical people I have ever met, myself included. Confession: I sort of think this particular first year is a total fuck-wit -- but still, I kind of respect her for being just a little bit bolder than I could ever be.
Here is some music you need to hear right now {right-click & save}:
I Fought in A War -- written by Belle & Sebastian, covered here by The Niro. This is a fucking awesome cover. If you have the original Belle & Sebastian, which you should, then listen to them both and enjoy the simplicity of the Niro version and how wonderful the lead singer's accent is.
eelang, this goes out to you on the occasion of having completed your thesis!
Belgian Beer and Catholic Girls by Siberian. These guys are getting so much fucking hype, man. They're from Seattle, and I've heard them described as a mix of The Killers, Muse, and Pete Yorn. Personally, I think they rock. This song goes out to my buddy
duedate!
Cradle by The Joy Formidable. In a few months everyone is going to love this band. I shit you not. (This one's for me!)
London Bridges by This is Ivy League. I'm pretty sure I'm wildly behind the times with this band, but this duo is too good to pass up. These boys, Ryland and Alex, have been pals since childhood and are actually members of Cobra Starship...but that's their side project. They've been compared to Simon and Garfunkel and Belle & Sebastian. I think they sound quite a bit like Vampire Weekend...maybe the Beach Boys. If you'll be in the area, and if you're lucky, they're performing at the Knitting Factory on the 14th, and at Sound Fix on the 17th. Also, listen to their song, "The Richest Kids," streaming
here. This is for you,
