Operation Migration

I don't post much but I did want to share something with you.
My daughter is working with an awesome organization, Operation Migration, for the second year. OM is a non profit working to reintroduce Whooping Cranes back into the wild.  (Short history)  Whooping Cranes are the largest bird in North America standing ~5' tall.  In the 1920s due to hunting and habitat destruction the population was reduced to 15 birds.  Due to the dedication of many people/organizations (including the U.S. Govt in the form of the Patuxent Wildlife Research Facility in Laurel MD) we now have in excess of 500 birds.
OM in partnership with the PWRF and the International  Crane Foundation, take chicks hatched in captivity, raise them in isolation, train them to follow ultralight craft and teach them (by flying the enitre route in the ULs with the chicks following) the migratory route from Wisconsin to Florida.  (Like in the move 'Fly Away Home' .)

You can get more info at http://www.operationmigration.org/index.html .
http://www.operationmigration.org/omteam.html  takes you to the Team info (including my girl :) )
http://www.operationmigration.org/Field_Journal.html  gets you to the Field Journal for  a day by day report on training and other information.
http://www.operationmigration.org/crane-cam.html takes you to the Crane Cam.  If you're up at 7:00am (eastern) you can watch the UltraLight training (weather permitting).  It's awesome.  The camera is on most of the day and you can see the chicks interact with each other as well as the adult resident pair that makes that site their summer home.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IsYDJKQFMU Takes you to an awesome promo done by OM.  It's really worth watching.

So if you get a chance clicky clicky on the links and take a look.  If you agree with me that it's an awesome program please pass some info along to your F-List.  Maybe we can get the word out just a little.

If you've read this far - thank you.  This is important work (and not just because my girl is involved :) ) and I thought I'd share it with you.

I'm off to DragonCon in a week or so and will try to keep up my tradition of reporting from the Con.

Thanks
