Polling the geeks out there

Outside of purchasing a DVD/VHS recorder, how would you convert VHS tapes to either 1) Straight to DVD or 2) VCD/AVI files?

I go to my grandparent's house and use their DVD/VHS recorder.:)

If it is only one or two, I've got a DVD/VHS recorder (which I've never used in this fashion) that could do the job..

Sadly we have several boxes of tapes that I know she would love to be able to not lose...

I don't know if you're talking about converting home movies or commercial tapes, but most of the commercial machines and many of the other commercial solutions won't work on pre-recorded VHS tapes due to Macrovision.
