Boom!

1:36 AM 12/13/09 · I originally read Angels & Demons just before The DaVinci Code came out, novel and not the movie, at the insistance of my aunt. She was very enamored by the author and I pretty much had to read both books on that alone but she was determined that I read them in order. I was looking forward to this movie for quite awhile, even after seeing the other film, as I heard that it was handled a bit better. They didn't try to do too much and it made for an easier flow...

...as much as one that can be managed in 2 hours and 38 minutes.

This movie, Angels & Demons, was good!

My familiarity with the novels Angels & Demons and The DaVinci Code and some of the things that occured in the beginning of this movie leads me to believe that as far as the movies are concerned the events happened in a different order. That The DaVinci Code is the first in the series by the films. I could be wrong about this, it's the discussion with the Vatican official in the beginning that gave me this impression but I haven't read Angels & Demons in ages so they may've been going on about something else.

The female lead is very attractive. Why does this bother me? The novel describes her as being too unbelievably hot for words...though not in those words. Picture a Playboy centerfold and give her the brains of a super genius. That's what she's supposed to be like. The mind was there in the performance but not the looks. It's kind of what I like to refer to as the 'Darby Shaw Conundrum' (Julia Roberts should never have been cast in The Pelican Brief) where for whatever reason they didn't go for the same kind of accuracy as the book. Not unusual but there are certain extremes. Need to re·read the novel as I think there's more to this than I'm currently remembering.

Tom Hanks character was supposed to be in the helicopter when it took off. The 'bad guy' goes up to save the Vatican much the same but he's not alone. When they're sufficiently high Robert (Hanks) realizes the truth of the matter and that's when they other guy jumps out. Robert follows suit and survives, more than one chute. Although the way it went in the film was different I forgive this little thing. It's addressed in the 'making of' portion of the special features and this new spin was well done.

That's about it...maybe. Keep thinking I'm forgetting something else.
