Fall 2008 Semester - day 1

Sep 02, 2008 16:50

First day of classes was hoooooooot. Very very hot. With temps around 90. And me walking about a half mile to a mile to school this morning. ::pants like a dog::
Aside from that, though, they went quite well.

GEOG 377 - Remote Sensing
I already feel like I'll have it a bit easier this time around, just because the teacher is actually *there* rather than stuck on an island in New Zealand. Last semester our teacher ended up missing the first three weeks of class because his boat was frozen in Antarctica. This meant that we "learned" the first few weeks of lecture material by reading the first four chapters in the text and answering some questions for every chapter, and then he tried to cram two lectures worth into one class period, and then another lecture into the first hour of lab, leaving only an hour to actually work on the lab, and then I had to go to work so I couldn't really stick around and ask him all the questions I wanted to ask. Which is why I ended up dropping it pretty much a month into the spring 08 semester.

This semester, Larson is actually around, and everything doesn't feel nearly as rushed as it did last semester. Hopefully this means I'll get a better understanding of the subject.

GEOL 310 - Sedimentary Geology
This is the class I was all happy about cause Sam is teaching it. Not going to gush much more than that, but I will say that I think the subject is really interesting, and this class and Geomorphology are probably the two classes I'm most looking forward too this semester. Yay dirt!

In other news, didn't sleep well last night. Big surprise, no? Though, honestly, it wasn't so much the location that I have to get used too, but the *mattress*. I like a firm mattress, but with a bit of a pillow top so my curves are a bit better supported since I sleep mostly on my side. My new mattress is plenty firm, but there is no cushy pillow top. It was a bit like sleeping on a nicely carpeted floor - maybe centimeter or too of plush, and then hard floor. No matter which direction I was laying, either my hips or my knees were protesting. Most comfortable was on my stomach, but after a few minutes on my stomach, my knees got all whiny. On my side my hips and lower back were making a fuss. On my back I was mostly okay, but I just can't sleep on my back.

So, mattress will take some getting used to, and I got a whopping two or three hours of sleep last night because of it (if even). I'm already on the search for one of those egg-crate type mattress covers or something similar to add a bit more padding, but so far the places I've looked have been sold out or just too expensive. I'll still be hitting up Walmart and possibly Target, so maybe I'll get lucky.
