Today we were signed up to swim with the wild spinner dolphins off the coast. The pod came right up to the front of the boat (or bow if you wanna get technical with it) when we got out far enough and escorted us for quite a bit just beneath the surface of the water. They were so beautiful and playful and it was so priceless and perfect and they were jumping out of the water and there were two or three little babies with them and it was just awesome -- eeexcept for the fact that about half way through the trip (if even), I got rather severely sea sick and was quite miserable by the time we were able to get in the water with them. So, yeah, I managed to get in the water maybe two times after quite a bit of heaving, and only saw the dolphins in the water with me the first time, and that was from a distance. After that, the boat people took myself - and Gus, who was even more sea sick then I was - back to the calm waters and solid ground of the harbor before they headed back out with the rest of the crew (there were 5 'guests' and three ship crew kinda people, so not a big gathering). This was okay, though, cause Gus and I then wandered off to a beach that was right next to the harbor. Gus sat on shore feeling sorry for himself, but I made the most of what opportunity I had and went snorkeling. Saw a weird ray-looking kind of fish (was flat like a ray and swam across the bottom but had a fish looking tail instead of that whippy thing rays tend to sport), lots of spiffy striped fishies, a whole bunch of barnacles, a weird little sea annemoney (only spelled right), and a sea turtle. So, I was satisfied enough with that. I woulda loved to have been able to spend more time with the dolphins, but such is life. I doubt if I would have been a that great of company for them anyway, sick as I was. :) Besides, I heard from my parents - who stayed on the boat - that they really didn't get close enough to interact with anyone. just did the occasional swim by and friendly chitterings and whistles from a distance, so I'm not as disappointed as I could be. I had fun snorkeling in the shallows anyway. Got a bit sunburned and stubbed my toe really really bad (it's already starting to turn purple... I hope it isn't broken... eeep!), but I think it was worth it. :)
Got back to the condo at around 1:30 local time, where we all proceeded to de-saltify ourselves. Then we pretty much just hung around there the rest of the day. Mom, dad, and I went and spent maybe an hour at a craft fair that was happening nearby, but we didn't do anything otherwise. Was rather nice, for a change, with all that's been going on the past two days.
Tonight will be out last here in Kona. Heading out to another place tomorrow, some condo built on the side of a volcano on the outskirts of Volcano National Park. I heard that it's cooler there because of the higher elevation, which will be quite welcome seeing as we've had around 90 with high high *high* humidity around here the past few days (think humidity thick enough that moisture condenses on the outside of your window while driving down the road, so you need your windshield wipers on even though there isn't so much as a fluffy cloud here and there in a big blue sky). It should be a nice trip in any case.
