Dinner with Kame in my Japanese Textbook

Sep 08, 2007 20:26

I could barely contain my laughter while sitting in Japanese class on Thursday as Kame peeked out from my Japanese textbook.  I was dying, and I couldn't share it with anyone!!  I was snorting with each new sentence, looking around the classroom to see if anyone caught me/was with me. I will translate a part of the passage we read in class (or attempt to translate, anyway), so you can see what I mean.   C'mon, laugh with me!

The scene:  Amy-san is having a nabe (pot) dinner with her host family and has an omoshiroi keikan (interesting experience).  I'll use the characters we are supposed to know.  (Kame was left as hiragana, and I put him in bold XDDD)

Kame=かめ=亀=turtle

My (bad) translation:

One day, I went to eat dinner with my host family.  In the nabe, there were lots of vegetables and meat (and such).  I asked, "What meat is this?  Chicken meat?"  <---(hehehe, never a good question)
"Try eating it, because it's delicious," said [host] Father.
"How? Delicious?"
"Yes, very.  But what is it?"
Everyone grinned but didn't say anything.  I became a little uneasy.  But because I was hungry and it was delicious, I ate a lot.  "Thanks for the food!"
"Amy-san, as a matter of fact, this is suppon."
"Suppon?"
"Suppon is turtle (Kame)"
"Eh!?!?!"
I began to feel sick.  Father said suppon (Kame!) is good for the body and is expensive food.
This was a very interesting once-in-a-lifetime experience.  When I return to my country, I can say to my friends, "I have eaten turtle (Kame!)"  Kame was delicious.  But, after all, I don't want to eat Kame anymore.

WAHAHAHAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!  ZOMFG.  Awww, Amy-san!  Kame was delicious (and tastes like chicken XD).  But no more, thanks.   XDDD  Oh lord.  I love it.

ETA: This is completely unrelated, but I finally broke down and bought two months of MegaUpload Premium.  It's sooo luxurious.
