It's been a really shit couple of days.. 2nd gear on the ZZR has been a little iffy for a while (it would randomly jump out of gear, since i bought it, but i screwed a gearchange into second a few weeks ago, and since then it's been getting REALLY bad..) - on sunday, it got to the point where rolling on the throttle in second, it'd start crunching.. Today it got worse, to the point that ANY throttle at all in second, and itd start crunching. Marco came over after work to have a look, and declared it not safe to ride.
So I'm back on the XJ, with it's extremely streched camchain, that makes it hard to start, and makes a really nasty knocking noise. Fingers crosed it holds up till I've got the money to fix the ZZR..

*assuming* it's 'just' the dogs on second gear, i need to replace four cogs in the gearbox.. at $200 each.. Plus there's a set of circlips in there that'll need replacing, and quite likely a selector fork.. All up, that's about $900 worth of bits.. and that's the best case scenario.. Since I've likely ground teeth off gears, there's probably metal filings working their way through the engine.. so at least a new oil pump (it's been weak since I bought it anyway.. has to be idled high to keep the oil pressure up..).. At the worse, I'd have to replace all the bearings in the engine, and maybe cams, rockers, etc.. could get REALLY expensive.. It's slightly humourous, cause I was going to celebrate next pay, cause I'd have paid off the repairs to the bike, from when i bought it (not paid off the actual purchase of the bike yet though..).
One option is a full engine and gearbox from joes wreckers for 1500 bucks... would want to know WHY it'd been wrecked in the first place though.. And that's still 1500 bucks.
Another option, is seeing if chris (the zzr riding bloke we met a month or so ago, and has HEAPS of zzr's and parts etc) has an engine/gearbox he wants to sell..
The other option that I'm toying with, is putting a new engine/gearbox in the XJ, and then let the ZZR sit for a few months while I save up for a new engine/gearbox there.. Looking like the most viable option..
Oh, and did I mention that I got a nail in my rear tyre on the way home tonight?
