Hmmmm, just picked the XJ up from Joes - had it in getting the valve clearances done.
Good news is the nasty clacking noise when it's cold is that the timing chain is REEEEEALY loose - so new timing chain (and rings for good measure while I'm at it) would bring it back to good running.. Though i'm still thinking a newer bike is in order..
Had a kawasaki GT750 tourer as a loaner for the day.. - while riding it about i was complaining about how gutless it was.. But getting back on the XJ, i realised that while the XJ packs a lot more punch, it's also a much rougher bike - you feel every bump, the steering is very touchy, and the engine+gearbox are seriously rough..
So yep, I think newer bike is in order :)
